Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the selection of a research area for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, focusing on the importance of personal interest and market considerations in choosing a field of study.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that starting a PhD without a specific research interest may be a mistake.
  • Another participant expresses a strong mathematical background and interest, seeking market insights to inform their decision.
  • A different participant emphasizes the necessity of having a passion for the field, questioning the appropriateness of pursuing a PhD without a clear fascination for a research branch.
  • Some participants agree that the individual must determine what they find fascinating, as it is a personal decision.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of personal interest in selecting a research area, but there is disagreement on whether it is appropriate to pursue a PhD without a clear focus.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the assumptions about the prerequisites for pursuing a PhD and the subjective nature of what constitutes a fascinating research area.

Dear Fellows

I am just going to start my PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Can you people suggest me, which area should I choose? That will be interesting and challenging...

Any Suggestions PLEASE...

I might suggest that you made a mistake starting a PhD without an interest in any particular research area.

my brother, i have mathematical background, i have a very strong interest... and i think i can do it... I just want to get an idea of the market... finally i will choose mine... just suggestion.

That isn't all you need for a PhD in engineering. You need to have a passion for your field. If you don't have any idea which research branch fascinates you, then you shouldn't be getting a PhD at this time.

So the question you should be asking is which branch of research do you find most fascinating?

yes this is what i mean...

Well we can't answer that for you. Only you know what you consider fascinating.
