I taught at a university for 10 years and during that time I was also a reservist in the military. When 9/11 happened I was activated and remained on active duty for 15+ years as a specialist in chemical and biological warfare agents. I worked mostly in toxicology. I deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 and 2010 and spent my time there digging up buried Soviet chemical weapons and responding to poisoning incidents. I had training in infectious disease control and ended up as a subject matter expert in the area of emerging infectious diseases and dangerous pathogens which got me over to Sierra Leone at the beginning of the ebola crisis. One of my specialty areas was chemical and biological decontamination. In my retirement I do developmental research on decontamination formulas.
