Of the listed ones I picked Monet, because I love the use of his colors.

Since you asked for a favoirte, none in that list match my choice - Waterhouse. Where I live, we are inundated with Georgia O'Keeffe: Museums, Touring displays, Alfred Steiglitz stuff. But that doesn't make my persoinal impression of her work any fonder. That is the great thing about Art - you can like/dislike just however you please.

That's a very odd list. The most influencial neo- and post-impressionists (Seurat, Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne, Breton, Dali, van Gogh,...) are missing as are all the Renaissance painters.

Gokul - I thought the list was more than odd. Missing are about 98% of the painters considered great by the old Art History I book I have. I don't get the "why" of the choices at all. e.g., Where's El Greco?

Maybe the OP thinks these guys all practiced steganography. You know, the art of drawing dinosaurs...

... well Stegosaurus at least...

I only asked people to choose from what was on the list. Of course I expected some debate about other painters which is good.Even with all your own personal favourites on the list it would be difficult to choose.

What about Andy Warhol? LOL, anyways, I voted for O'Keefe seeing as she lived and worked in New Mexico for many years.

Hey Jim, where are you at if your "inundated with O'Keeffe"?

I'm also a Waterhouse fan, obviously.

I live in New Mexico. In a ghost town. We used to see O'Keeffe at the Abiquiu store every once in a while. Years ago. She was kinda doty back then.

Taos has the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The museum staff has shows around the state all the time. It regularly get good press because she was considered a local girl. Her art was good, but - considering all of the art in Santa Fe and Taos and the number of really repected artists who lived and died here, she gets more than her fair share of air time. IMO.

MODS: how do I make these into thumbnails, or smaller! aah they're HUGE!

Dali (how is Dali not in there??) and Henry Fuseli:

Johann_Heinrich_Füssli_008.jpg

Probably best known for:
John_Henry_Fuseli_-_The_Nightmare.JPG

By the way. I've been looking everywhere for a book containing Fuseli's paintings and drawings, and can't find one (a good one: big pictures, etc.).

It seems weird that a decent compilation hasn't been done, considering how influential he was. So if anyone knows of one or happens to stumble upon one, do please please please tell me.

Great art is a matter of personal opinion.I don't like lots of artists that art history books say are good.Last time I saw a van Gogh in London I thought it was dreadful.
And I am not a big fan of most of Monet's work.Nor do I like most religious paintings.
And as for most world famous artists from the last 50 years ... they are just awful!

pitot -
That's it: opinion. There are some really good artists - alive as we speak. And it is fine to love/hate any painting or painter. Just don't expect my love/hate list to match yours. Ever.

I've spent an awful lot of time in museums, and with a little hunting around you can almost always find at least "one something good" from one of the lots of artists in art history that you personally hate. There are a few that I cannot seem to do that with. Mostly 20th C abstractionist-types.

The list I put iup is not a list of my favourite artists.I thought I'd put up a bit of variety
with european, mexican and us artists and some female and male ones. When you live in europe like me the temptation is just to put up da vinci, monet, rembrandt etc.
But I agree with you that most artists in well-known galleries have a few paintings most people will like.
