SUMMARY

Aboreal apes, such as Proconsul, went extinct primarily due to late Miocene climate change that reduced forest density, favoring terrestrial apes. Additionally, competition for resources with early monkeys contributed to their decline. In contrast, surviving arboreal species like orangutans, gibbons, and chimpanzees possess unique locomotion adaptations that allow them to access food sources in trees that many monkeys cannot reach.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of late Miocene climate change
  • Knowledge of primate evolution and species classification
  • Familiarity with resource competition in ecological contexts
  • Insight into arboreal versus terrestrial locomotion in primates
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the impact of late Miocene climate change on primate habitats
  • Study the evolutionary adaptations of surviving arboreal apes
  • Examine the ecological dynamics between early monkeys and arboreal apes
  • Explore the locomotion differences between arboreal and terrestrial primates
USEFUL FOR

Primatologists, evolutionary biologists, ecologists, and anyone interested in the evolutionary history of primates and the factors influencing species survival.

Why did aboreal apes like Proconsul die out; whereas some terrestrial apes made it?

Late miocene climate change thinned out the forests, so favouring ground apes. That's the usual explanation.

Another theory is that they began to directly compete for resources with the first early monkeys. The arboreal ape species alive today (orangutans, gibbons, chimps) are able to reach fruit and leaves in trees that most monkeys cannot because of the different ways they move.
