Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the experiences of fathers regarding premature graying of hair, often linked to their children's adventurous activities. Participants share personal anecdotes, express concerns, and reflect on the emotional impact of parenting in relation to their children's risks and experiences.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note an increase in gray hair as a direct response to their children's risky activities, such as climbing and flying.
  • There is a discussion about the psychological aspects of fear and danger, with one participant suggesting that understanding this difference is crucial for both parents and children.
  • Several participants share humorous anecdotes about their children's activities and the resulting gray hair, indicating a mix of pride and concern.
  • One participant mentions the scientific aspect of hair graying as a loss of pigmentation rather than an actual color change.
  • There are playful exchanges about the potential for future activities, such as skydiving, which could further contribute to gray hair.
  • Some participants engage in light-hearted banter regarding physical fitness and body image, relating it to their experiences with climbing and health.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally share similar sentiments about the emotional toll of parenting and the humorous side of graying hair, but there is no consensus on the underlying causes or implications of these experiences. The discussion remains largely anecdotal and exploratory.

Contextual Notes

Some statements reflect personal experiences and subjective interpretations of risk, fear, and parenting, which may not be universally applicable. The discussion also touches on the interplay between physical activities and emotional responses, but lacks rigorous scientific analysis.

Who May Find This Useful

Parents, particularly fathers, who are navigating the challenges of raising adventurous children may find this discussion relatable and engaging.

(Hair's already grey).
I took one of my boys on their 18th birthday for their first ink, and he has at least 5 now.

I'm thinking about going for my second one...

Chinese is a succinct language.

Ha!

But seriously, yes, according to my cell phone, it roughly translates to "Victory." And it's Korean, not Chinese.

Here's what my daughter said about the tires:
That is a Carbon Cub. I flew it one time with the owner of the aircraft. No, I do not or have not yet taken off or landed on any grass strips, nor will I unless I get some other opportunity outside of my flying club. I suppose that plane probably could but the tires are honestly not that big compared to true bush plane tires.
And when I mentioned:
You have lots of people seeing your flying photos. I had asked Greg how many members PF had now and this is what he said:

We're at about 200k members!

Love You
She said:
That’s cool dad. For the record, I don’t care about that so much. I’m just trying to share my stuff with YOU.
Maybe I should stop sharing here.

Since rock climbers and pilots tend to be male, educated, physically fit, and intelligent, I'm sure that she has more opportunities than time to accept them all. For her, that's a target rich environment. Just doing my bit to make dad feel good...

Yes but that doesn't come with the cringe factor of dad finding her dates.

You should have taken him to a brothel -- that's less permanent and he'd actually have learned something.

(And if he still wanted a tat, you could have taken him to a Korean place and secretly paid the guy to tattoo the words "My dad took me to a brothel".)

Hmm. I can see her sandals on his feet, but where is she? (Is this a tricky "Where's Waldo?" puzzle? I'm guessing she's behind the camera for this pic?)

And,...er,... is it my imagination,... or,... does he indeed bear quite a strong resemblance to yourself? (Not sure if that's anything to worry about, or merely normal -- I don't have much knowledge of such things.)

I somehow had the impression that pretty much anyone today would have one or more GoPro's or similar installed in their favorite airshow/competition/buzzing-around plane so they could peruse and analyse their performance in details afterwards (usually only the mounts are installed, pilots bring their own cameras). If your daughter don't have any, perhaps that could be an idea for a great Dad-to-daughter gift?!

She has a GoPro that I got her years ago. Here's what she said about your post:
Pretty cool (and funny.) In regards to the latest comment, I do have a GoPro camera, actually. I just have forgotten/never taken it with me while flying aerobatics. I can’t figure out how to make the battery last long enough for a full, high quality video. I think I just need new batteries.

I'm no expert, but I can imagine rechargeable battery packs in cameras will have the same issue with (significant) diminished capacity over time as mobile phones, so if her camera is years old and well used it may just be a new battery that is needed. A bit of a shame to "loose" all that great footage just because of a bad battery. On the positive side in this case you don't need to get her a brand new camera, only a new battery pack. :-p

On the other hand, if its the camera itself that has limited duration even with a brand new battery, then an upgrade is perhaps in order? It should be possible to find a camera that go at least 90-120 min (think this is the norm, actually) so they can be activated during one of the pre-takeoff checklists and still capture the whole flight. If you (or she) gets a new one, remember to read/watch some reviews first because I hear some of the newer GoPro's are a bit flunky.

Looking forward to some (more) great cockpit shots in this thread soon

Edit: inserted missing words.

My latest from my daughter from 8/14, where she's at now:
... another aerobatic competition coming up next week in Sterling, CO.

Here's what she says now:
Things are going okay. I did my two flights yesterday and they were decent. I’m currently standing in 3rd place for Primary. I have one more flight today. The winds have been crazily high yesterday and today, which makes flying the sequences and staying in the box difficult to say the least. Wish me luck.

If its any comfort, you are not the only father exposed to a hair de-toning potential from an awesome aviator daughter. For instance, take this young lady currently attempting to fly solo around the globe at record age: https://flyzolo.com/route/

With several of her legs being 4-5 hours over open oceans in 500 m height it has to be grey hair inducing for her father (and mother, and, well, the whole family I guess). She is currently stuck in Greenland waiting for the weather to clear, but if all goes well she should be crossing the North and Middle Americas next.

I tip my hat to these wonderful young women who in increasing numbers by their own motivation show the world that gender is not and should not be an issue.
