SUMMARY

The placement of groundwire or shieldwire at the top and between the conductors of electricity pylons, specifically in 220kV and 500kV structures, serves a critical function in lightning interception. This configuration acts similarly to a lightning rod, effectively protecting the conductors from lightning strikes. The design ensures that the groundwire can intercept electrical surges caused by lightning, thereby safeguarding the integrity of the electrical system. Multiple ground wires may be utilized to enhance this protective measure.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electrical transmission systems
  • Knowledge of lightning protection principles
  • Familiarity with pylon design and structure
  • Basic concepts of electromagnetic induction
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the design principles of high-voltage transmission pylons
  • Explore lightning protection systems for electrical infrastructure
  • Study the effects of electromagnetic induction in power lines
  • Investigate the use of multiple ground wires in electrical safety
USEFUL FOR

Electrical engineers, utility companies, and professionals involved in the design and maintenance of high-voltage transmission systems will benefit from this discussion.

We have noticed in various electricity pylons/towers that groundwire or shieldwire is always placed at the top and between the two conductors ?
why is that so?

If you look at the 220kV structures or 500kV structures of pylons, you will notice the groundwire is placed at the middle of conductors at top of the pylon?

is there any induction effect or any specific reason for that?

The ground wire is there to intercept lightning. It is analogous to a lightning rod seen on rooftops. Sometimes there is more than one ground wire.
