Quora is being valued at over a billion dollars, prompting skepticism about its worth compared to traditional forums like Physics Forums (PF). Critics argue that Quora resembles a social media version of Wikipedia, questioning why it commands such a high valuation. Some participants express confusion over why PF lacks a Wikipedia page, despite its popularity among scientists and engineers. The discussion highlights contributor fatigue on Wikipedia, suggesting that users may prefer the engagement offered by Quora. Overall, the conversation reflects a mix of skepticism and curiosity about the valuation and functionality of Quora compared to established platforms.

The question and answer site Quora is being touted as worth over a billion dollars (http://www.businessinsider.com/quora-would-turn-down-a-1-billion-offer-says-investor-2011-2), but it looks to me to be another online forum. Can anyone see why it should have such a ridiculous valuation. Would anyone ask a question on Quora rather than PF?

I agree, its just a Facebook version of Wikipedia as far as I can tell. In fact, Wikipedia should maybe take the hint and try funding itself with a similar social network.

Just for grins I did PhysicsForums.com http://www.mywebsiteworth.com/site/www.physicsforums.com and it claims $129,383

Why doesn't PF have its own wikipedia page, that's the question.

Heh, I got so addicted to Quora that I practically stopped going everywhere else for 6 months.

It takes some time getting used to though.

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/04/ff_quora/ shows its real ambition. Basically, there's a lot of contributor fatigue on Wikipedia (http://gawker.com/5827835/wikipedia-is-slowly-dying) so people get more excited about contributing to Quora
