SUMMARY

Wisdom, the world's oldest known living wild bird at 62 years old, has successfully hatched a healthy chick, defying conventional beliefs about avian fertility. This Laysan albatross, tagged by scientists, has outlived the average lifespan of her species, which is typically less than 30 years. Wisdom has flown approximately 3 million miles since her tagging, showcasing remarkable endurance and resilience.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of avian biology and lifespan
  • Knowledge of Laysan albatross behavior and ecology
  • Familiarity with wildlife tracking methods
  • Awareness of environmental challenges affecting bird populations
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the reproductive biology of Laysan albatrosses
  • Explore wildlife tracking technologies used in avian studies
  • Investigate the impact of climate change on bird migration patterns
  • Learn about conservation efforts for endangered bird species
USEFUL FOR

Wildlife biologists, ornithologists, conservationists, and anyone interested in avian longevity and reproductive health.

The world’s oldest known living wild bird at age 62 gave birth to a healthy chick that hatched Sunday, challenging the conventional wisdom about how long birds remain fertile.

This bird, named Wisdom by scientists who stuck a tag on her ankle years ago, has lived longer than the average Laysan albatross, which dies at less than half her age.

Hmmm...a mom at 62. Not sure how wise that is.

She was in the news a few years ago for surviving a tsunami:

She's now my favorite Albatross :!).

I wonder how old that is in human years? I'm happy for her. She's flown 3 million miles since she was first tagged? Wow.
