My intuition is wrong on many things, so I thought I would throw this question out there to see what everyone thinks. And hopefully some people with teaching experience will respond (of course everyone is welcome to respond).
On average how many hours do full-time teachers (high school or college, specify) work a week? Of course, I am excluding breaks and holidays. Also, when I say college teacher I mean somebody that is paid only to teach, not somebody that is paid to do research and teach at the same time (though if you are a professor I still would like to hear your opinion and experience).
For the past few years I have had the goal of becoming a full-time community college math teacher, and one of the big reasons is that I think it would not be that many hours of work per week on average (I am thinking, or hoping, 30 to 40 hours a week). My rationalization being, 15-20 hours in class, 6 hours in office, so approx. 26 hours a week as a minimum. Now, I think that teachers can assign and grade as much, or as little, homework as they want. For lesson plans, the first few years will probably be more work, but once you have taught a class 10 times I think the amount of time spent here would be very small. Of course, I say all this with absolutely no experience teaching at all, which is why I want some other opinions. Also, writing this out almost makes me question teaching altogether: If I want to spend the minimum amount of time possible, I would probably not be a very good teacher.Let's hear your experience and ideas. Thanks.
