In summary, Trib said that the most popular junk mail was definitely the "penis enlargement" offers. He received as many of those as he did the rest of his junk mail combined.

My email account only let's me receive 1000 emails per 24 hour period. Today both my mom and my boss sent me the same number of emails. My girlfriend sent me 15 times what either of them did. Over 90% of my emails were pure junk mail. I got some that wanted to show me my credit report. 3 times more were selling Viagra. Funnily enough I got the same number of emails from sexy women in my area wanting my body (although for some reason none responded) as I did Viagra offers. But the most popular junk mail was definitely the "penis enlargement" offers. I got as many of those as I did the rest of my junk mail combined, before my account closed. How many of each email did I receive?

I don't believe there is enough information to generate a unique answer.

e(mom) = e(boss)
e(gf) = 15 x e(mom)
x = 17e Total valid email will be some multiple of 17.

j(cred) = y
j(Via) = 3(j(cred))
j(sex) = j(Via)
j(penis) = j(cred) + j(Via) + j(sex)
y = 14j Total junk will be some multiple of 14.

There is nothing that defines the ratio of valid email to junk mail. Without that, there are several valid answers.

(?)x + (?)y = 1000

I've found 5:
Code:
  X Y
  2 : 69
 16 : 52
 30 : 35
 44 : 18
 58 : 1
Mom, boss = 2 each, girlfriend = 30. Credit = 69, Viagara,sexy=207, penis=483. Total = 1000.
Mom, boss = 16 each, girlfriend = 240. Credit = 52, Viagara,sexy=156, penis=364. Total = 1000.
etc., etc.

Does "But the most popular junk mail was definitely the "penis enlargement" offers. I got as many of those as I did the rest of my junk mail combined" translate to "j(penis) = j(cred) + j(Via) + j(sex)"

I guess it's not clear what is meant by "rest of my junk mail". Is this all the junk excluding the enlargement junk (and there's no other junk other than those described) or is it all the junk other than the kinds described or is it all the junk exckuding the enlargement junk but including junk not described?

Who said there was any junk other than those described? Not Trib. You are inventing pieces not in the problem as given.

Oh my god. Did you edit the OP? I don't recall seeing the bit about 90%.

(Yes. Yes you did!)

That eliminates all but the 2:69 result.

So:

Mom, boss = 2 each, girlfriend = 30. Credit = 69, Viagara,sexy=207, penis=483. Total = 1000.

He doesn't say there weren't any either. You are assuming that's true, but it isn't explicitly stated to be so.

Painful as ever.

How long have you been back? I left because you said you were leaving. I didn't want to be a part of a PhysicsForums without a Gokul.

1. Why can't you handle receiving emails anymore?

As a scientist, my field of study requires a lot of focus and concentration. Constantly checking and responding to emails can be a major distraction and hinder my productivity.

2. Can't you just ignore or filter out the emails?

I have tried to ignore or filter emails in the past, but it still takes up mental space and adds to my workload. It's better for me to eliminate the source of distraction altogether.

3. Is there a specific reason or incident that led to this decision?

No, there is not one specific incident. It's more of a cumulative effect of constantly being bombarded with emails and feeling overwhelmed.

4. Will you still be reachable through other means of communication?

Yes, I will still be reachable through other means such as phone calls or in-person meetings. However, please respect my decision to limit email communication.

5. How can I contact you if I have important information to share?

If there is important information that needs to be shared, please reach out to me through alternative methods and I will do my best to respond in a timely manner.
