What is Engineering and design: Definition and 18 Discussions

The engineering design process is a common series of steps that engineers use in creating functional products and processes. The process is highly iterative - parts of the process often need to be repeated many times before another can be entered - though the part(s) that get iterated and the number of such cycles in any given project may vary.
It is a decision making process (often iterative) in which the basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective. Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing and evaluation.

Engineering Building a peripheral for obtaining data from water

I'm working for a project with a goal of analyzing data obtained from a device that extract data from bodies of water, such as bacterias found, the chemical levels, etc. I've been instructed to use existing equipment for it to work. What I've been recommended to use include: bateries, solar...

    SolidWorks Sketching Visual Problem

Hi Everyone, I could use some help in SolidWorks, when I go to sketch geometry, the software creates a lot of lines that extend off the starting point and they don't go away until I snap back to the starting point. I have an image attached to show what is happening. This creates a problem...

    Agitator Torque Calculation

Hi All, I must calculate the torque and for an agitator motor. An anchor type agitator/scraper, removing crust off the edge of a tank. My instinct is the max or startup torque will be = (Moment of Inertia) x (Angular Acceleration) + (Drag force of the submerged impeller)* Max radius +...

Elevator Frame Design: Can It Stand Alone?

Hello there, I am wondering, if I were to build an elevator in a building, is it possible if I build the elevator frame (and rails) without using the rail bracket? The weight of the cart plus the contents would be supported by only 4 steel columns fixed to the ground. I know it is a silly...

Heat transfer through a MultiLayer Cylinder (find the Temperature inside)

Hello, I am a Mechanical Engineer a little out of practice on Heat transfer. I am trying to solve this problem. It must be solvable but i have yet to find right equations online. I have a multi Layer Cylinder made up of C350 marraging Steel,Zinc Alloy-12 , then 6061 Aluminum T6. All that is...

Other Last year of my Ph.D, and having a crisis about my work (data science)

Hi all, I just want to gain some perspective as I am sure there are people in the same boat or have been where I am. I am in the home stretch of my Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering, I have manuscript published and a couple more in the pipeline. I work in big data and how to use it to come up...

    Mechanism with a linear actuator

Designing a machine. For it to work properly there would need to be a mechanism that connects the linear actuator to the stand that would allow for the actuator to move horizontally relatively freely with applied forces at the bottom, when there is simultaneously a downward applied force by the...

How to pump liquid from vacuum to atmosphere

Greetings, The application is a wiped film evaporator (~1.2-1.5 kg/hr throughput). The concentrate and the distillate gravity feed round bottom flasks. I'm not worried about the cold-trap waste. The evaporator volume is under vacuum (~0.003Torr). I want to pump the liquid from the...

    Thermodynamics of an Arctic greenhouse?

For a business project, I'm looking into the viability of a greenhouse situated in Canada's far northern town of Iqaluit. The problem is how to mathematically simulate the internal air temperature of the greenhouse. What I already have are detailed 3D renderings of the greenhouse as well as all...

Mean Radius of Annulus with Bolt Hole Pattern

Hello all, I am trying to remember (I did it in Uni) how to calculate the effective mean radius of an annulus that contains a pattern of holes on a PCD. Consider the following image (pinched from: https://www.solenoid-valves.com/ ): If one was to vary the value of PCD, then the effective...

How TO make a variable 3D metal box

Hi i want to know how to make a 3D metal box whose length, width, and height i can change. For example, i have a box of 3 m x 3 m x 3 m. i should be able to extend any dimension by a maximum of 1 meter i.e 4 meter (say). I want to use this to store items whose size is unknown, but the limits of...
