What is Years: Definition and 634 Discussions

A year is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun. Due to the Earth's axial tilt, the course of a year sees the passing of the seasons, marked by change in weather, the hours of daylight, and, consequently, vegetation and soil fertility. In temperate and subpolar regions around the planet, four seasons are generally recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In tropical and subtropical regions, several geographical sectors do not present defined seasons; but in the seasonal tropics, the annual wet and dry seasons are recognized and tracked.
A calendar year is an approximation of the number of days of the Earth's orbital period, as counted in a given calendar. The Gregorian calendar, or modern calendar, presents its calendar year to be either a common year of 365 days or a leap year of 366 days, as do the Julian calendars; see below. For the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the calendar year (the mean year) across the complete leap cycle of 400 years is 365.2425 days. The ISO standard ISO 80000-3, Annex C, supports the symbol a (for Latin annus) to represent a year of either 365 or 366 days. In English, the abbreviations y and yr are commonly used.
In astronomy, the Julian year is a unit of time; it is defined as 365.25 days of exactly 86,400 seconds (SI base unit), totalling exactly 31,557,600 seconds in the Julian astronomical year. The word year is also used for periods loosely associated with, but not identical to, the calendar or astronomical year, such as the seasonal year, the fiscal year, the academic year, etc. Similarly, year can mean the orbital period of any planet; for example, a Martian year and a Venusian year are examples of the time a planet takes to transit one complete orbit. The term can also be used in reference to any long period or cycle, such as the Great Year.

Exploring Light Years and the Concept of Time in Physics

Well today I was reading much about the subject of light and photons. And we agree that photons are massless and taht is the reason they travel at c. But if something travels at c then it means it has no time as is said and if that thing traveling at c has no time then it means for a observer...

Ive had some revelations about maths in the last couple years.

    Average Percentages over 3 years

I am just having trouble with percentages. Lets say a town has a population of 1,000,000 in 2006 1,200,000 in 2007 1,800,000 in 2008 The percentage increase from 2006-2007 is 20% 2007-2008 is 50% So, what I want to work out is the AVERAGE percentage per year. The increase...

Why are we so sure the universe existed in a point 13.7 billion years ago?

I've given this a lot of thought the last couple days. I look at the Hubble equation v=H_0 d, and I don't see how this necessitates everything existing in a single point at some time in the past. Certainly, everything was really close together 13.7 billion years ago, but not in an infinitely...

Why did we stop at 46.5 billion light years?

It's been bugging me. We've looked 13.5 billion years into the past, supposedly only about 500 million years short of the big bang, at objects 46.5 billion light years away. Calculating Distances 1 Billion Light Years Away

MHB Radioactive Substance Decay: ~14g Left After 3 Years

If 40 grams of radioactive substance decomposes to 20 grams in 2 years, then to the nearest gram the amount left after 3 years is well i used the $N(t)=N_{0}e^{-kt}$ So $20=40e^{-k2}$ thus deriving k=.3466 Thus $N(3) = 40e^{-.3466(3)}$ resulting in: $N(3)= 14.1410$ or approx $14g$ just...

How is the universe exactly 13.7 billion years old, in absence of absolute time?

Distribution of mass across the universe is not even. Therefore, passage of time should vary according to gravity. Which means at places time will pass at a higher pace or a lower pace than in respect of other places. Then, how is the entire Universe exactly 13.7 billion years old?
