Are These Condensed Structural Formulas for C7H16 Correct?

In summary, the conversation discusses writing condensed structural formulas and names for three constitutional isomers with the molecular formula C7H16. The first two isomers, 2-methylhexane and 3-methylhexane, are correct. However, the third isomer, 3-ethylpentane, is incorrect as it should be 2-ethylbutane or 3-methylpentane. The correct formula for the third isomer is CH3CH(CH2CH3)CH2CH3. There is also a simple C7H16 isomer.

Hi Guys, I attempted the question below and just need someone to have a look to make sure there are no mistakes.

1. Homework Statement

Write condensed structural formulas and the names for three constitutional (i.e. structural) isomers with the molecular formula C7H16.

Homework Equations

None.

The Attempt at a Solution

CH3CH(CH3)(CH2)3CH3 - 2-methylhexane

CH3CH2CH(CH3)(CH2)2CH3 - 3-methylhexane

CH3CH(CH2)(CH3)CH2CH3 - 3-ethylpentane

Last one is wrong, you have two separate substitutents on the second carbon, not an ethyl.

So it should be CH3CH(CH2CH3)CH2CH3?

That is 2-ethylbutane (AKA 3-methylpentane, naming it by the longest chain).

Isn't that C7H15 ?

And isn't there a very simple C7H16?

1. What is a condensed structural formula?

A condensed structural formula is a type of chemical formula that shows the arrangement of atoms within a molecule. It is a shorthand notation that uses lines and letters to represent the bonds between atoms and the elements present in the molecule.

2. How do you write a condensed structural formula?

To write a condensed structural formula, you need to start with the atomic symbols of the elements present in the molecule. Then, draw lines between the atoms to represent the bonds. Finally, add any necessary functional groups and hydrogen atoms to complete the structure.

3. What is the difference between a condensed structural formula and a Lewis structure?

A condensed structural formula is a simplified version of a Lewis structure. While a Lewis structure shows all the valence electrons and lone pairs in a molecule, a condensed structural formula only shows the atoms and bonds. This makes it a more practical notation for larger and more complex molecules.

4. Why are condensed structural formulas useful?

Condensed structural formulas are useful because they provide a quick and easy way to represent the structure of a molecule. They also give important information about the connectivity and functional groups present in the molecule, which can be helpful in predicting its properties and reactivity.

5. Can condensed structural formulas be used for all types of molecules?

Yes, condensed structural formulas can be used for all types of molecules, including organic and inorganic compounds. However, they may not be as useful for very large or complex molecules, in which case other notations such as skeletal formulas or 3D models may be more appropriate.
