In summary, the instantaneous centre of four bar linkage is the point on a four bar linkage where the velocity of two adjacent links is equal and opposite to each other at any given instant. It can be calculated using relative motion analysis and is a crucial concept in the study of kinematics and dynamics of machinery. The location of the instantaneous centre affects the type of motion, velocity, and acceleration of different points on the linkage, which can impact its overall performance. The location of the instantaneous centre can also change during motion, especially in cases where there is play or clearance in the joints.

Homework Statement

Hi i need some help in calculating the instantaneous center of a four bar linkage, frame:507cm, rocker:305cm, crank:136cm and coupler:406cm.

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I've used a four bar simulator but I'm sure if what is shown is the plot of the center.

Thanks for the post! Sorry you aren't generating responses at the moment. Do you have any further information, come to any new conclusions or is it possible to reword the post?

What is the definition of "Instantaneous centre of four bar linkage"?

The instantaneous centre of four bar linkage is defined as the point on a four bar linkage where the velocity of two adjacent links is equal and opposite to each other at any given instant.

How is the instantaneous centre of four bar linkage calculated?

The instantaneous centre of four bar linkage can be calculated using the concept of relative motion analysis, where the velocity vectors of two adjacent links are drawn and the point of intersection of these vectors is the instantaneous centre.

What is the significance of the instantaneous centre of four bar linkage?

The instantaneous centre of four bar linkage is a crucial concept in the study of kinematics and dynamics of machinery. It helps in determining the direction and magnitude of velocity and acceleration of different points on the linkage, which is essential in designing and analyzing mechanical systems.

How does the location of the instantaneous centre affect the motion of a four bar linkage?

The location of the instantaneous centre affects the motion of a four bar linkage by determining the type of motion, i.e. whether it is a rotation or a translation. It also influences the velocity and acceleration of different points on the linkage, which in turn affects its overall performance.

Can the instantaneous centre of four bar linkage change during motion?

Yes, the instantaneous centre of four bar linkage can change during motion as the velocity vectors of the adjacent links also change. This is particularly important in cases where the four bar linkage is not a perfect mechanism and there is some amount of play or clearance in the joints.
