I'm a physics undergrad student in Brazil and I'm about to finish my sophmore year. I'm really interested in computational and theoretical physics and I'm currently in the beginning of this year long research project with a professor in my university on the study of the 3+1 spacetime split of field equations in De Donder-Weyl theory.

Here in Brazil I've seen quite a few winter and summer programs in experimental physics, but none in theoretical physics. And I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations of programs I could apply to or some advice on how I could find such opportunities?

I have family that lives in Boulder and would also like to ask if you guys know of any research opportunities there for international undergrads? Or if there's the possibility of like sending and email to a professor there and asking if he could be my advisor for a volunteer summer research project?

Ask your professors in Brazil whether they know any of the professors in Boulder. A personal introduction and request for help by one of your professors in Brazil would be your best option.

REU as a program is very, very, very restrictive when it comes to international programs. The exceptions are cases where the university pitches in its own resources.

If you are counting on someone else to pay for you, the odds are extremely low. There are plenty of US students who cost less and whose background is more certain.

1. What is an REU program?

An REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) program is a competitive research opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in hands-on research projects in their field of interest. These programs are typically funded by the National Science Foundation and provide students with valuable research experience and mentorship.

2. Are international students eligible for REU programs in theoretical physics?

Yes, international students are eligible to apply for REU programs in theoretical physics. However, eligibility requirements may vary depending on the specific program, so it is important to carefully review the program's guidelines before applying.

3. Can international students receive funding for REU programs?

Yes, international students can receive funding for REU programs. Many programs offer stipends to cover living expenses and may also cover travel costs for international students. Additionally, some universities may offer scholarships or grants specifically for international students participating in REU programs.

4. How can I find REU opportunities for international students in theoretical physics?

There are several ways to find REU opportunities for international students in theoretical physics. You can search online for programs specifically geared towards international students, check with your university's physics department for recommendations, or reach out to professors in the field for potential research opportunities.

5. What are the benefits of participating in an REU program as an international student?

Participating in an REU program as an international student can provide numerous benefits, including gaining hands-on research experience, building professional connections, and enhancing your resume for future graduate school or job applications. Additionally, it allows you to immerse yourself in a new culture and expand your global perspective.
