Why Not Titanium Alloy Rocket Engine Nozzles?

My understanding is Titanium is only available in significant quantities from Russia. That doesn't seem like a good choice just based on that. I recall that the spy plane SR-71 had a titanium skin. To get that much titanium they had to use a third party and some misdirection to get it from...

Stargazing The Curse of Elon Musk: Redirect Satellites to Sun or His Backyard?

It seems to me reflected photons are wasted photons as far as energy generation is concerned. Why should solar panels be reflective? Alternatively, use the NASA black to trap photons and generate thermal phonons to operate solid-state thermoelectric generators (Alphabet Energy).

PeriNeuronal Nets: Protein-Sugar Structures Surrounding Neurons

That would imply that learning in that region is connection based and does not involve varying synaptic weights. A couple of the latest papers also indicate that synaptic weights are irrelevant (they are either connected or not connected) and the real neuronal business (a single weight...

I How do I show a skeptic that atoms/molecules actually exist?

There are a number of physicists that are entertaining the idea that we are in a simulation. That is, there is a higher reality in which our simulation is running. This is perhaps due to VR which is getting good enough to make such an idea conceivable and that we may soon be able to build our...

I How do I show a skeptic that atoms/molecules actually exist?

Perhaps because VR is getting to be rather good at replicating a "reality" there are a number of well know physicists that are entertaining the idea that we are in a simulation. In such a case there would be a reality outside of our synthetic reality. That uber reality could also be simulated by...

    Earth's gravity increasing over time?

zuz, Even if you are correct about Earth adding 250 Tons of mass every day that would be equivalent to adding an amino acid molecule to you wife's forehead once a year. Russ_Watters I think you need to look at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_equations_in_gravitation This is a place one...

Wouldn't using AC to power a lamp result in flickering?

I believe 60Hz was set by Nicola Tesla to reduce the cost of electrical transformers for high tension transmission lines. 50Hz transformers would be larger and more expensive. Making it higher than 60Hz reduces transformer efficiency. I think Europe chose 50Hz to avoid Tesla's patents. As far a...

Whatever happened to geothermal energy production?

My understanding is that Yellowstone has enough geothermal resources to supply the entire US with power for the foreseeable future. Why wouldn't tapping that resource also draw off sufficient heat to prevent that super volcanic site from blowing up thus saving hundreds of thousands of lives?

    Calderas and 'Super-Eruptions'

Is it like earthquakes? The longer you wait the bigger the bang?

Could Amino Acids Really Originate from Space?

Even if the density of molecules in an interstellar gas cloud in not dense enough for molecules to form shock wave through this media can change these densities sufficiently to change that.

What does a circle with a slash through it mean?

Diameter is probably correct in your case but Ø is often used to distinguish zero form O. I have also seen it used for the greek letter phi on occasion.

Heat generation of phosphor layer in white LED

I've wondered about this as well. I know that leds in the 5w range or above need rather large heat sinks or they self destruct. This alway surprised me for such small wattage ranges. I suspect a thermal run-away happens like what used to happen in early transistors.

Insights You Will Not Tunnel Through a Wall - Comments

I got an answer from the oil and gas industry. In gas pipelines there is moisture and H2S that reacts with the iron in the metal to make FeS. The Hydrogen from the reaction in the form of ions can penetrate the metal and also accumulate in striations in the metal, combine into H2 and actually...

Insights You Will Not Tunnel Through a Wall - Comments

What is the process by which hydrogen gas H2 escapes from a metal container by going through the metal matrix? Is that a type of tunneling? There is a negative charge barrier from the metal electrons tor the electrons circling the H2 gas molecules but they are treated as a package with a...

Is there a limit on rocket engine exhaust velocity?

Jonny_Tsunami has the right idea. Once you are in space you can use light, accelerated ions, exploding nukes. Ion propulsion engines are already in use. A exploding nukes engine was proposed in the 1950s (Project Orion). A successfully tested nuclear thermal engine (Superheated liquid hydrogen...
