Graduate Infinite Self-Energy of a Charged Point Particle
I am referring to Griffiths- Introduction to Electrodynamics. The book says that the infinite energy of a point charge is a reccuring source of embarassment for electromagnetic theory afflicting quantum version as well as the classical. I have no Idea about how the self-energy becomes infinite...- Himanshu

Graduate Infinite Self-Energy of a Charged Point Particle
Recently I became acquainted with the problem of Infinite Self-Energy of a Charged Point Particle as described by both classical and quantum theory. Infinities of this kind certainly hint at the inconsistency and incompleteness of the theory itself. I was speculating that infinity is arising dew...- Himanshu

Electron's response to a oscillating Electric field.
Homework Statement The problem is to find the motion of the electron of charge -e and mass m which is initially at rest and which is suddenly subjected to an electric field E= E0sin(\omegat). The following mathematical expression is safe and sound but I am having trouble with the Physics...- Himanshu

Work done in a Gravitational Feild of a Hemisphere
The problem concerns with the work done by the Gravitational Feild force exerted on a mass 'm' kept on the center of the base of a hemisphere of mass "M" radius "R". The way I did it was, first I found the Center of Mass of the hemisphere which is 3R/8. Next I used the concept => Work done=...- Himanshu

Alkene reaction with Br2 and NaCl (saturated)
There is a marked difference of the 'reactivity' and 'selectivity' between Br and Cl. Cl is more reactive than Br and Br is more selective than Cl. Therefore Cl would be added first and Br would go to the substituted carbon. You may want to visit this site for organic reactions and there...- Himanshu

Graduate What Happens When Atoms Age and Decay: Fundamental Forces at Play?
I think that the above questions are fundamental in nature and requires nothing more than the knowledge of fundamental physics. 1. The law of gravitation is by far attractive in nature (though I have read some articles that describe its repulsive nature but that is our cup of tea right now)...- Himanshu

Undergrad Travelling more than Speed of light
Oo yes! I guess that's the reason that we can see only upto a limited distance into the space. Because after a certain distance the space itself seem to expand faster than the speed of light. So light beyond that point would never reach us. Thank you marcus. That was a really cool article. -

Undergrad Travelling more than Speed of light
It is impossible for a body object to travell faster than the speed of light. But speed is also relative. If we consider frame dragging in a region close to a rotating black hole and send a projectile in a circular orbit around the black hole, accelerate it to speed close to the speed of light... -

Astronomy Olympiad Estimation Question
No body draws a 2km long line(except someone who wants to get his name enlisted in Guinness World Records). The question clearly mentioned to estimate the length of a line that could be drawn until the ball point pen runs out of ink. What else could one interpet out of it.- Himanshu

Astronomy Olympiad Estimation Question
Today was my Astronomy Olympiad Exam. As I had expected, an estimation question came this time also. The question was 'if somebody draws a straight line with a typical ball point pen then estimate how long would that line be'. After a few estimations my answer came to be about ~2km. Now I have...- Himanshu

Spinning liquid creating a parabolic shape
The curve of the shape of the liquid that you get has a tangent at every point whose slope is given by \large tan \theta which is equal to \large dy/dx. But \large tan \theta = \omega^{2} x/g. On solving the equation you get \large y= \omega^{2} x^{2}/2g - the equation of a parabola.- Himanshu

Undergrad Analemma Visualisation: 3D Graphics & Visualisations
Recently I read about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analemma" on the internet but I cannot visualise their formation depending upon the causative factors such as obliquity, eccentricity, and the angle between the apse line and the line of solstices. I wanted to know if someone knows about 3D...- Himanshu
