Weakness in mental arithmetic = weakness in math?
Here's what you do: If you know programming, write a program that randomly generates a list of 100 subtraction problems where the largest integer is 10. So stuff like 10 - 2, 7 - 8 etc. Give yourself 10 minutes to complete it. After you have finished it and have gotten a PERFECT score, create...- kirab

What is the best textbook for learning circuits in an introductory EE course?
It doesn't really strike me as an *introductory* circuits book, more of a text on applying the knowledge of circuits for practicing engineering/scientists. Am I wrong?- kirab

What is the best textbook for learning circuits in an introductory EE course?
Hey all, I know this is similar to one of my other threads in the past, but I thought the situation is different enough to warrant a new thread. Basically, my first EE course (on introductory E&M and introductory circuits) is starting and 2 textbooks are required for it. The book required for...- kirab

Choosing a School for Engineering
You could also go to UofT and enter their TrackOne program, which is a general 1st year engineering thing. Although taking this route you would miss out on UW's awesome co-op program! But Waterloo is known more for computers/math/electrical than it is for civil/mechanical, my impression is that...- kirab

Schools Breakdown of engineering college life
Really good points actually... making me reconsider my last post. The thing is, can everyone REALLY be very efficient and fit 5 hours of casual study into 1 or 2 "sessions"? I guess this is a skill that needs developing, and it looks like it is an important one if you want a really balanced...- kirab

Schools Breakdown of engineering college life
You're either amazingly smart or don't go to a very difficult school. Over here (in the elec/comp program at least), most people don't have time to do much else other than study because there is a LOT of course content and the material itself is difficult.- kirab

Hours of class includes labs and tutorials. I assume that's what the OP meant since they said 'credit hours'?- kirab

Schools Breakdown of engineering college life
What kind of an engineering school only has 17 hours of class a week? Over here its anywhere from 25 to 35 hours, +/- 2 hours on either end. Here they say you should be doing between 2 to 3 hours of work for each hour in lecture, though.- kirab

3D Equilibrium with cables (statics)
Homework Statement Diagram is attached. The mast OA is supported by 3 cables. If cable AB is subjected to a tension of 500N, determine the tension in cables AC and AD and the vertical force F which the mast exerts along its axis on the collar at A. a = 6m b = 3m c = 6m d = 3m e = 2m f = 1.5m...- kirab

Differential Equations Prerequisites
Would the OP have done eigenvalues (linear algebra) in Calc AB and BC? I'm not sure what the system's like in the States, but my guess is that it's a no?- kirab

Pully/spring equilibrium (statics)
Diagram attached. The spring is unstretched when theta = 0. Determine the theta for equilibrium. I'm not quite sure how to get started here. My prof said that we cannot assume that the tension in the 400 N force cable at A is equal to the tension at the spring close to fixed support C...- kirab

Proving Equilibrium in a System of Forces Using Moment Equations
OH! Yeah My sum of Fx and Fy came from looking at my altered diagram... which had the member lying horizontally, so I stupidly assumed that the x-coordinate system was horizontal and that the y-coordinate system was perpendicular to that, simply from looking at my diagram which has been rotated...- kirab

Proving Equilibrium in a System of Forces Using Moment Equations
Sorry for posting in the wrong sub-forum :( Thanks for the help! My issue is: when I do summation of forces in x and y, I get P = (Cy(cos(theta)) + Cx(sin(theta)))/(cos(theta)+sin(theta)) from sum of Fx and P = -(Cx(cos(theta))+Cy(sin(theta)))/(sin(theta)-cos(theta)). Which I'm not sure if...- kirab
