Simple Harmonic Motion and amplitude help

Hey there, I got the problem solved. What I did actually was took v(t) / x(t) . If you write out the equations you will see that the amplitude cancels out and you are left with tangent of some number. I then used guess and check to find the the phase angle which took a while. It was a very...

Simple Harmonic Motion and amplitude help

How so? The way I learned to find phase angles is take the displacement equation x(t) and the velocity equation v(t). If you divide these 2, you are left with x(t) / v(t) = tan(wt + phase angle).

Simple Harmonic Motion and amplitude help

Homework Statement A 0.50 kg particle executes linear harmonic motion about the point x = 0.0. At t= 1.0, it has a displacement x = 0.50m and a speed of 5.0 m/s to the right. The frequency of the motion is 2Hz. Determine (a) the spring constant, (b) the amplitude of the motion, (c) the...

    Non-elastic collision answer confirmation

Homework Statement A 13-kg block is at rest on a level floor. A 400-gram glob of putty is thrown at the block such that it travels horizontally, hits the block, and sticks to it. The block and putty slide 15cm along the floor. If the coefficient of sliding friction is 0.4, what is the...

How Does Momentum Conservation Determine Spring Compression in a Collision?

Okay, maybe a stupid question. How do I find that out? I know that U_{s} = \frac{1}{2} k x^2{}. Isn't the variable x the horizontal distance stretched? If so, that variable isn't given.

How Does Momentum Conservation Determine Spring Compression in a Collision?

Homework Statement A 1.0-kg block at rest on a horizontal frictionless surface is connected to an unstretched spring ( k =200 N/m ) whose other end is fixed. A 2.0-kg block whose speed is 4.0 m/s collides with the 1.0-kg block. If the two blocks stick together after the one-dimensional...

Projectile Motion: Calculate the speed of the plane

Ok, these are my values. I have that it traveled 968.7m in the x-direction. I have it that it traveled 1213m in the let's say, the hypotenuse (if you draw a vector). I found the velocity to be 242.6 m/s. I am not good at explaining because I don't have symbols. Here are the values I came up...

Projectile Motion: Calculate the speed of the plane

The time is already calculated in the problem. It says that it takes the projectile 5 seconds to hit the ground. I do understand it has horizontal and vertical components. Maybe I misunderstood you?

Projectile Motion: Calculate the speed of the plane

Homework Statement A plane, diving at an angle of 53 degrees with the vertical, releases a projectile at an altitude of 730m. The projectile hits the ground 5.0 seconds after being released. a.) Calculate the speed of the plane b.) Calculate the horizontal distance traveled by the...

Finding the area between 2 curves

Homework Statement a.) Find the area of the region bounded by the graphs of f(x) = 1/x and 2x+2y=5 b.) Also, use the shell method to setup the integral that represents the volume of the solid formed by revolving the region bounded by the two same graphs about the y= 1/2. (Do not...

    Using Trignometric Integration

Yeah, I noticed that, hence when you try something similar in a graphing calculator/matlab/mathmatica it gives wrong answers. I will in the future, thanks.

    Using Trignometric Integration

Mark44, jpreed's notation is correct according to this worksheet. I ended up splitting the integrals into two separate ones and using U-Substitution on the first set and just taking the integral of cot2x which is provided by an integration table in the back of my text. Thanks for your...
