Programs Cambridge DAMTP PhD: Learn More About the Program & Postdoc Prospects

First, thanks very much for your very informative post. Regarding Part III - I will be doing an MSc in math next year (not in Cambridge); would I still have to do Part III or can I apply directly for the PhD?

Programs Cambridge DAMTP PhD: Learn More About the Program & Postdoc Prospects

I'm interested in theoretical particle and mathematical physics. The grad schools that I'm considering applying for are all in the U.S. - but it has come to my attention recently that Cambridge DAMTP might be a very good program to apply to given my interests. I was wondering whether anybody...

Finding Good Coffee Beans Without Breaking the Bank

Light roast single-origin (as opposed to a blend) is generally considered to be at the top, especially if grown in Kenya. Try to get organic coffee. It will taste better and is healthier for you.

Math MSc - Imperial vs. Durham vs. Warwick

Mish mash - I'm actually going for the MSc in pure maths - not the MSc in forces and fields (though I hope to substitute 1-2 of the forces and fields courses for maths courses). Do you know if the good tutor-student relations extend to that program as well?

Math MSc - Imperial vs. Durham vs. Warwick

Thanks dx - I appreciate the detailed description (:

Math MSc - Imperial vs. Durham vs. Warwick

and another thing - is there much cooperation between students in the department? How is the general environment in the department?

Math MSc - Imperial vs. Durham vs. Warwick

dx - first of all, how would you assess the teaching at Warwick? Do you get to interact much with faculty or are they mostly just busy doing their own research and only teach out of obligation? The other issue that is very important to me is the content of the courses; is there any emphasis on...

Math MSc - Imperial vs. Durham vs. Warwick

Interesting... Yes, it definitely would be nice to visit and get a feel for the places. I take it you're not a big fan of the Labour party, Ex1? (~; Thanks for your input!

Exploring Problem-Based Learning in Science Education: Insights and Experiences

My experience as a student. Once I really understand an idea, I have no need for a variety of examples. The only reason that such need arises is if the lecturer has failed to clearly deliver the concepts. So instead of going with PBL (which can only develop students with great technical skills...

Exploring Problem-Based Learning in Science Education: Insights and Experiences

Your students will never have as good a grasp of the underlying ideas if you go exclusively with PBL. The best experiences that I have had were of lectures that were organized and kept track of the overarching ideas. Examples were always nice as supplements, but I have personally disliked every...

Math MSc - Imperial vs. Durham vs. Warwick

I'm a U.S. student - so visiting the places before making a decision unfortunately isn't really an option for me... Could you please elaborate further on the "clientele"?

Help with Self-Study Physics - Texts & Prerequisites

I'm not sure in what depth you want to study it... You should definitely make sure that your calculus (through multivariate) is up to date, brush up on any rusty trig, and know some very basic linear algebra (matrix and vector operations, etc.). You can get the rest as you move along (Boas...

Math MSc - Imperial vs. Durham vs. Warwick

Trying to decide whether to accept an offer for a math MSc from Imperial College London, the University of Durham, or the University of Warwick. I'm mostly interested in geometry, topology, and the mathematical foundations of physics (e.g. of field theory, gravitational physics). Does anybody...

    Is there a way to isolate x for tanh x = 1?

why are you setting tanhx = 0?...

    Is there a way to isolate x for tanh x = 1?

You know that tan(alpha) = 1 when alpha = pi/4. So now just write tanhx in terms of exponentials and solve using simple algebra (tanhx = pi/4).
