Calculate Potential Energy of Electron at a Parallel Plate Capacitor

Homework Statement An electron with a speed of 5.0x10^6 m/s is injected into a parallel plate apparatus, in a vacuum, through a hole in the positive plate. The electron collides with the negative plate at 1.0x10^6 m/s. What is the potential difference between the plates? Vi= 5.0x10^6...

Calculating Mass of a Block in SHM with Given Parameters

I'll just go ahead and assume that this SHM is a mass on a spring hanging from the ceiling. On the highest amplitude, it's not really moving too much.

Calculating Mass of a Block in SHM with Given Parameters

That's what I'm confused about. If I have that velocity, I should be able to get the mass. But I don't know that velocity, nor do I know how to calculate it.

Calculating Mass of a Block in SHM with Given Parameters

That was a typo. I meant to calculate the energy value for when the spring is at 0.12m. The reason is because I have the speed on that value. I don't have speed at 0.15m.

Calculating Mass of a Block in SHM with Given Parameters

Whoops, I actually got a mass of 0.37kg. Still not the answer, though.

Calculating Mass of a Block in SHM with Given Parameters

The energy stored in a spring at 0.15m is: 1/2 (75N/m)(0.12^2) = 0.54 J of energy. Now, I can substitute the equation and solve for m like this: 1/2(75N/m)(0.12^2) = 1/2(M)(1.7^2) I get a mass of 0.6 kg. Answer is 0.21 kg

Calculating Mass of a Block in SHM with Given Parameters

I don't know. I wrote down the equation for SHM that gives period.

Calculating Mass of a Block in SHM with Given Parameters

Homework Statement A block attached to a horizontal spring of force constant 75 N/m undergoes SHM with an amplitude of 0.15 m. If the speed of the mass is 1.7 m/s when the displacement is 0.12 m from the equilibrium position, what is the mass of the block? k = 75 N v = 1.7m/s @ 0.12m...

How Does Breaking Apart Enhance Safety in Formula One Cars?

What my instructor was saying that the because the formula one cars break off more easily, they make it more safe for the driver somehow. For example, if a person was in a vehicle and parts of it start to fall off, how would that increase the change in time?

How Does Breaking Apart Enhance Safety in Formula One Cars?

Sorry, but I haven't been studying that equation. The equation that I learned is ∆p = F∆t When Formula one car crashes, they break into many pieces. More than a normal car going that high speed. This is apparently a design feature for the drivers inside the Formula 1 cars. Although the car...

How Does Breaking Apart Enhance Safety in Formula One Cars?

Product of force acting on the body and the time interval. I believe that you want the time in the equation to increase, right? For example, when you cradle a ball, you receive the same amount of force. That force is just in smaller amounts due to the time.

How Does Breaking Apart Enhance Safety in Formula One Cars?

Impulse is change in momentum. It increases impulse because of how it increases the time. I wrote that before, but my physics teacher says that the answer has to do with the time.

How Does Breaking Apart Enhance Safety in Formula One Cars?

Homework Statement Why are formula one cars(except the place where the driver sits) designed to break apart into small pieces very fast? I believe that there is all kinds of things as aerodynamics, but my assignment talks about how the breaking apart mechanism is a safety feature 2. Homework...

2D Momentum Question on pool balls

Homework Statement Standard pool balls have a mass of 0.17kg. Before a collision, ball A is at rest and ball B is traveling at 4.5 m/s [N]. After the collision, ball B is traveling at 1.6 m/s [N20E]. What is the velocity of ball A? Homework Equations pinitial = pfinal m1v1 + m2v2 = m1v1 + m2v2...
