In an alternate universe, Megadeth's Rust in Peace (1990) would have been released with Chris Poland instead of Marty Friedman ( who joined after Chris Poland did not rejoin Megadeth ).

He was living next door to a drug dealer in Saint Kilda, Melbourne and he wrote this about people and dodgy characters constantly knocking at his flat as they'd get the wrong door. It left him feeling shaken as he never knew who next was coming to his door.

Colin sang lead on the original so it's not exactly a cover, but what an electrifying performance.



"After Men at Work, for the better part of a decade, I was stumbling around being unfocused. It was pre-internet; I really had to try to find my audiences by going out on tour. Men at Work really didn't build a foundational audience. We came in as a pop band with enormous radio success; once that goes away and the band breaks up the audience tends to go away with it. You're left with what you want to make of it. When you start out doing those tours, you start again [and] you tend not to attract a very big number of people. I'd play to a hundred people or sometimes less".

It's pretty darn hard to build an audience that way. Can it even be done any more? The little clubs have largely disappeared. And in the old days fans could call in to a radio station and make requests. Long ago radio was automated.

I guess Bandmaid did it the hard way, but it took about eight years. Amazing she could keep the band together that long. But Japan is different. The key is having a theme song to a popular television show, which they eventually got. NHK theme songs are a lot hipper than in the USA. Bandmaid had popularity overseas. The government in need of foreign exchange promoted them through the national NHK TV network to keep this going.

If you have a splash it has to be on display and played deliberately and with finesse. He was not the first to do Cherokee so it kind of still fits with the thread.

More splash cymbal. I once convinced a drummer to use one but he later gave it up. My guess is that he was made fun of for it.



Yet more splash via Kanade Sato. Can't see it but it's there. Often Koiai play along with pre-recorded sound. Saves a mouth to feed. The ebassist is a hired hand, not a member. For years they hired drummers too, but Kanade proved too good to pass up.



It is a most musical nation. Heck even the Prime Minister of Japan plays trap drums.
