AI Thread Summary
Citizendium is introduced as a "progressive fork" of Wikipedia, aiming to create a citizens' compendium that emphasizes expert guidance and personal accountability through the use of real names. The project seeks to differentiate itself from Wikipedia by fostering a more responsible management of free knowledge. However, concerns arise regarding the requirement for contributors to use their real names, as many users are reluctant to disclose their identities online. Questions are raised about how the platform will verify the authenticity of names provided, and skepticism exists about attracting quality contributions versus those of less credible individuals. The discussion also notes that users who prefer anonymity can still contribute to Wikipedia, highlighting a potential conflict in Citizendium's approach.

...or as they would like to call it, a "progressive fork."

The Citizendium (sit-ih-ZEN-dee-um), a "citizens' compendium of everything," will be an experimental new project. It will begin life as a "progressive fork" of Wikipedia. But we expect it to take on a life of its own and, perhaps, to become the flagship of a new set of responsibly-managed free knowledge projects.

Hmmmmm "both to allow people a place to work under the direction of experts, and in which personal accountability--including the use of real names--is expected."

I see the reasoning behind this, but a lot of people do not wish to give out their real identity online.

How would they even know if you gave your real name? If you provide a first and last name, they'd have no way to know it's not your real name. Otherwise, they'll only attract all those crackpots who sign every post with their full name, including middle initials.

Unless they intend to verify the identity of everyone that registers. I have no idea how they plan to verify identity, but they restated it in the FAQ and said that anyone that wishes to contribute anonymously still has wikipedia. Funny that on the sign up list, name is "optional"

I don't get why only a satirical parody of http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Main_Page" credit of being the only encylopedia that anyone can edit.
