Math Math PhD: Is it Possible to Have a Math Research Career?

AI Thread Summary
Many American math professors hold PhDs from a select few prestigious institutions. Being in a less renowned program does not preclude success in a math research career. The quality of training and personal initiative play crucial roles in achieving research goals. Success in mathematics is determined more by individual effort and contributions than by the name of the institution. Therefore, a serious math research career remains attainable regardless of the program's reputation.

So, nearly every math professor I've ever happened to know who is an American got his or her PhD from one of about a dozen places, all of which are great, hallowed names in mathematics. I am currently in a math PhD program which, while it is certainly not bad, is not one these great names, either. I want you to be brutally honest: am I totally screwed at ever having a serious math research career?
