in a maths book i have there is an example of solving a quadratic. part of the process reads:
y^2 - 12y + 32 = 0
implies that
(y-8) (y-4) = 0
i don't understand how this second equation was reached based on the first one.
could someone add in the steps that gets me from...
We were recently reviewing quadratic equations in my algebra 1 class. As my teacher simplified equation after equation on the board, I began to get this nagging feeling there was something incorrect.
I have pin pointed where I believe an error was made.
At this point in solving a...

f(x) = -2x^2 + 12x + 12
I was able to express it in standard form and find the maximum value, but I can't seem to get the x-intercepts
I got -2x^2 + 12x + 12 = 0
-2 (x^2 - 6x + 6) = 0
does that mean I need to use the quadratic formula or did I do something wrong?

Hi, I'm hoping someone out there is going to see something in this problem that I don't because I really don't get it:
Consider the equation:
\sigma=(\omega + i \nu k^2)+\frac{\alpha^2}{\omega + i \eta k^2}
It doesn't really matter what the variables mean, (i^2=-1 of course) but...

1.can a quadratic function be just set to 1 number e.g. 5 or can it be a bigger number. at the moment I am working on numbers below 10 to get used to the formulas.
2. is this correct how i am doing it?
formula
N --> N2--> 3N2 + 4
e.g.
N =5
5 x 5 = 25 = N2...
Trying to rewrite a quadratic equation in the form a(x - h)^2 + k. The equation I'm trying to rewrite is:
y = x^2 + 3x + 5/2
Not looking for an answer, just looking for how to do this (I don't know how to do it if it has rationals in it). Thank you.
