A Poor General GRE Score: Is It Okay for a Math/Physics Major?

Click For Summary
Achieving a score of 160 (81st percentile) on the quantitative reasoning section of the GRE can be concerning for a math or physics major, especially when paired with a strong academic record, including straight A's in advanced courses like quantum field theory and differential geometry. Many participants in the discussion emphasize that a lower general GRE score is often overshadowed by strong performance in subject-specific tests, such as the physics GRE, and by excellent grades in graduate-level courses. The consensus is that admissions committees are likely to prioritize overall academic performance and subject test results over a single GRE score, suggesting that retaking the GRE may not be necessary.

So I got a 160 (81%-tile) on the quantitative reasoning section of the general GRE which is embarrassing for a math\physics major! I've gotten straight A's including graduate classes like quantum field theory, differential geometry etc; I think I just made mindless arithmetic errors on the GRE which I am very prone to.

I'd rather not spend another $200 to retake. Is this okay? If someone does well on the physics GRE subject test, will a school mostly overlook a poor general score?

Thanks!

It's ok, no one will care, much less so with good grades in graduate courses.

TL;DR: Jackson or Zangwill for Electrodynamics? Hi, I want to learn ultrafast optics and I am interested in condensed matter physics, ie using ultrafast optics in condensed matter systems. However, before I get onto ultrafast optics I need to improve my electrodynamics knowledge. Should I study Jackson or Zangwill for Electrodynamics? My level at the moment is Griffiths. Given my interest in ultrafast optics in condensed matter, I am not sure which book is better suited for me. If...
