Accelerator Operator: Job Description & Responsibilities

AI Thread Summary
An accelerator operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of particle accelerators, ensuring they function smoothly within larger user facilities like synchrotron centers. Key duties include monitoring beam parameters, conducting system checks, managing beam filling and topping, and performing start-up and shut-down procedures as needed. The role focuses on maintaining optimal performance and safety of the accelerator systems.

What sort of things does someone who works at a lab as an "accelerator operator" do. Obviously the name speaks for itself but I was looking more a more specific description.

Accelerator operator (not the be confused with accelerator physicist), does exactly what the name implies, operate an accelerator. Many accelerators are part of a larger user facility, such as a synchrotron center. As an accelerator operator, you make sure the beam parameters are nominal, run system checks, do beam filling/topping/etc., do start-up and shut down whenever necessary, etc... etc. In other words, things that require the accelerator to run smoothly.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
Yesterday, 9/5/2025, when I was surfing, I found an article The Schwarzschild solution contains three problems, which can be easily solved - Journal of King Saud University - Science ABUNDANCE ESTIMATION IN AN ARID ENVIRONMENT https://jksus.org/the-schwarzschild-solution-contains-three-problems-which-can-be-easily-solved/ that has the derivation of a line element as a corrected version of the Schwarzschild solution to Einstein’s field equation.
