Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the relationship between time and the speed of light, exploring whether they are interconnected and how they relate to concepts such as the expansion of the universe and the nature of spacetime. Participants engage with theoretical implications and conceptual questions rather than seeking definitive answers.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question the meaning of "the speed of time" and whether it can be defined in a meaningful way.
  • There is a suggestion that if one were to hypothetically travel faster than light, time would not exist for them, leading to the idea that light might move at the same speed as time.
  • One participant proposes that the expansion of the universe could be related to the speed of time, suggesting a connection between the two concepts.
  • Another participant clarifies that the expansion of the universe is measured in speed per distance, specifically around 70 km/s per Mega parsec.
  • Concerns are raised about the idea of using light as a reference frame, with some arguing that light cannot have a rest frame since it is always in motion.
  • Participants discuss how light travels at speed c in a vacuum and how this interacts with the expansion of the universe, noting that the total time for light to travel between two points depends on the expansion of space.
  • There are inquiries about why photons travel at the speed they do and whether time itself could be seen as needing to travel at a minimum distance.
  • A geometrical interpretation of relativity is introduced, suggesting that everything advances at the same rate in spacetime, but the direction differs based on motion.
  • Some participants express confusion about the relationship between gravity and the expansion of the universe, and how time is perceived in these contexts.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various viewpoints and uncertainties regarding the relationship between time and light, the nature of spacetime, and the implications of the universe's expansion. No consensus is reached, and multiple competing views remain present.

Contextual Notes

Participants acknowledge limitations in their understanding and express confusion about the concepts discussed, particularly regarding the nature of time as a dimension and its relationship to light and gravity.

Light is electromagnetic radiation; and time is not electromagnetic radiation!
This is where I'm trying to get, light is not the only thing that travels at ##c##, there is a reason for that am i wrong?

Every massless "thing" travels at the speed of ##c##. That's pretty well understood.

Good Good, why? is almost like is not traveling in space but in something else, but i know that it is in space, because it can get distorted by gravity

I don't think that just by don't understanding completely makes me wrong, maybe i just can't proof it yet, I'm looking at it in new ways, i will not surrender about it yet

Proof by endless repetition?

gravity not exist as well but doesn't mean that we can't measure

This is not only wrong, but logically impossible.

I'm not trying to prove it yet, I'm just trying to understand it better, I'm only a teenager who wants to study physics in a soon future, and you guys are the experts, but i need to give my best being this dumb to understand at least a bit

You can't do that by personal speculation based on incorrect beliefs, or by throwing out further questions when you haven't even understood the answers to the previous ones. And you certainly can't by refusing to listen to what people who are much more knowledgeable than you are telling you.
