Does anyone happen to know what kind of image source Red6's ATARS system uses? Does the 18,000-nit brightness specification listed on the official website refer to the display's brightness?

Physics news on Phys.org
That level of brightness would refer to the helmet display - where supplemental information needs to be visible even against direct sunlight.

Here are the specs provided by red6ar:

Turning Science Fiction Into Reality

160H FOV
1.8% OPTICAL EFFICIENCY
18000 nits BRIGHTNESS
10 ms LATENCY

Our EVE Headset (Enhanced Visual Environment) is a transformational leap in wearable augmented reality technology. Previously there has been no means by which virtual assets could be visually represented in the real world, outdoors, and at high speeds. Red 6’s EVE hardware is the brightest headset available, allowing for outdoor use in full daylight and, critically, in high-speed environments.

And, as you can tell from the image in @berkeman's post, this is the helmet that Darth Vader will be upgrading to.

Thank you very, very much for your reply! May I ask if you know what kind of image source is used in the headset? I really can't find it and would love to learn about it.

You would need to contact the manufacturer to get an authoritative answer. But I would guess it is micro-OLED technology. Micro-OLED can reach that nit rating (18,000), it's low power, and often used in this kind of application.
