Background colors need more differentiation

AI Thread Summary
There is a request for more distinct background colors in the forum to better differentiate between the original posts and reply boxes. Users find the current design challenging, as the opacity of elements makes it difficult to read unless hovered over, leading to accidental replies in the wrong sections. The design choice aims to reduce visual clutter, but this has created usability issues. A suggested workaround involves using carriage returns to position the cursor correctly for replies. Improved color differentiation could enhance user experience and reduce errors in posting replies.

Could we have more distinct backgrounds? For example, the box where the reply is could be better differentiated from the original post. And the line with the report, reply, like, etc. is hardly readable unless the mouse is on that line. And I can't tell you how many times I have accidentally typed replies in the middle of the quote because of the $#%&** scrolling reply box and lack of color differentiation. Please??!

This is by design to help reduce design noise. The opacity should improve when the mouse is anywhere on that specific post.

Can you explain this in a different way, I am not sure what you mean.

One trick that I use to avoid that problem is to use carraige returns to put my cursor in the right place for typing my reply. So I click the +Quote link, scroll to the bottom of the page to click Insert Quotes, and then I hit CR 3 times. That inserts the quote box(es), and positions my cursor 2 lines below the last end-Quote. Maybe give that a try to avoid clicking into the wrong part of the Reply box...?

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
