AI Thread Summary
To calculate the baseboard molding needed for a room measuring 3.5m by 6.526m, the perimeter is determined using the formula p = 2l + 2w, resulting in a total perimeter of 20.052m. For carpet, the area is calculated by multiplying the length and width, giving an area of 22.8 square meters. The discussion emphasizes the importance of using the correct formulas for perimeter and area in home improvement projects. This information is essential for accurately purchasing materials. Proper calculations ensure that the right amount of baseboard and carpet is obtained for the room.

A rectangular room is 3.5m by 6.526m

a. If baseboard molding is to be obtained to go around the perimeter of the room, calculate the correct amount that must be purchased.

b. How much carpet must be purchased to cover the area?

To find the perimeter of a rectangle, add the lengths of all 4 sides. p= 2l+ 2w

To find the area of a rectangle multiply the lengths of 2 adjacent sides. A= lw

I picked up this problem from the Schaum's series book titled "College Mathematics" by Ayres/Schmidt. It is a solved problem in the book. But what surprised me was that the solution to this problem was given in one line without any explanation. I could, therefore, not understand how the given one-line solution was reached. The one-line solution in the book says: The equation is ##x \cos{\omega} +y \sin{\omega} - 5 = 0##, ##\omega## being the parameter. From my side, the only thing I could...
