AI Thread Summary
The Smart Dial controller is designed to optimize irrigation by utilizing advanced technology that automatically adjusts watering schedules based on daily weather patterns and local Evapotranspiration (ET) data. It leverages the ET Everywhere™ Data Service, receiving daily updates from satellites to ensure efficient water usage. The controller's WeatherTRAK™ scheduling engine customizes irrigation for each zone, ensuring that only the necessary amount of water is applied, regardless of the type of irrigation components used. While some users express skepticism about its necessity in certain regions, particularly where water availability is a concern, the technology aims to enhance water conservation and reduce runoff in irrigation practices.

The Smart Dial controller saves water and reduces irrigation runoff by
employing an advanced technology to automatically reprogram itself
based on daily weather patterns and local Evapotranspiration (ET).
Using the ET Everywhere™ Data Service, the Smart Dial controller
receives a paging signal with the local ET value from an orbiting
satellite each evening. Then, through its internal WeatherTRAK™
scheduling engine, the controller adjusts its irrigation programming to
replace the amount of water lost through the previous day’s ET. Plus,
with per-station programming, Smart Dial adjusts each zone to apply
only the water needed, regardless of whether sprayheads, rotors, stream
rotors or drip components are used in the zone.[continue]

I've been using that system for years; I call it 'rain'.

It sounds more like a crop irrigation system, or maybe the lawns around large corporate buildings.

wut?

Only works if you have water to start with. Probably wouldn't be needed much in the south-east U.S.

The guy who uses this makes his own artificial water.

He'd better not be stomping on my patent for 'instant water' (just add water).
