Can Waves Really Transmit Angular Momentum?

SUMMARY

Waves can indeed transmit angular momentum, specifically through electromagnetic waves and mechanical waves. Electromagnetic waves, such as circularly polarized light, can impart both orbital and spin angular momentum, causing physical objects like plates to twist. Additionally, experiments with waves on a string demonstrate that circular waves can transfer angular momentum to a rotating disc, effectively causing it to spin. These principles are well-documented in scientific literature, including studies published in the Physical Review journal.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetic wave properties, particularly circular polarization.
  • Familiarity with angular momentum concepts in physics.
  • Basic knowledge of wave mechanics, including wave propagation in strings.
  • Experience with experimental physics techniques for demonstrating wave behavior.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of circularly polarized light and its applications in optics.
  • Explore the principles of angular momentum conservation in various physical systems.
  • Investigate wave mechanics experiments involving strings and rotational dynamics.
  • Study the implications of angular momentum transmission in quantum mechanics and electromagnetic theory.

why can't a wave transmit angular momentum?

They can and do. Electromagnetic waves can carry both orbital and spin angular momentum. If you shine a beam of circularly polarized light on a plate, the plate will twist slightly. This has been http://prola.aps.org/abstract/PR/v50/i2/p115_1" .

You could do a similar experiment with waves on a string. Connect a rope to one edge of a disc mounted so that it is free to rotate about its axis. Hold the other end and send circular waves down the rope and you will be able to get the disc spinning. The angular momentum in the wave is imparted to the disc.
