Can you help with questions about a Masters degree? (Quantum Biology)

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a fresh graduate's inquiry about pursuing a master's degree, specifically in Quantum Biology, and the considerations involved in choosing a research focus within that field. The conversation touches on the relationship between undergraduate studies and graduate program choices, as well as the motivations for pursuing advanced degrees in the sciences.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • A participant expresses uncertainty about choosing a master's degree in Quantum Biology and seeks guidance on selecting a research focus.
  • Another participant notes that the suitability of a master's program depends on the specific courses taken during undergraduate studies and the nature of the programs available.
  • One participant suggests that the decision to pursue a master's degree should stem from a desire for deeper understanding in a specific subject rather than the degree itself.
  • A participant highlights their interest in quantum physics but expresses confusion about the objectives of studying Quantum Biology, questioning the rationale behind pursuing a field without clear understanding.
  • A later reply challenges the initial participant's interest in Quantum Biology, questioning the motivation to enter a field without a clear grasp of its meaning.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the approach to selecting a master's program, with some emphasizing the need for clarity in research interests while others focus on the variability of program definitions and requirements. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the participant's specific interest in Quantum Biology.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding the participant's understanding of Quantum Biology and the specific programs available, which may affect the advice given. The conversation also reflects a lack of consensus on the motivations for pursuing graduate studies in the sciences.

firstly I am a fresh graduate ... I studied biomedical physics and I am intending to get a master degree but I am hesitating about the field that i will study it ..!
I am thinking about the Quantum Biology i need to know your opinion about this and to guide me how to choose the point of research .?!
and do I can get a master degree in physics not biophysics ??

It depends on the programs, what courses you took as an undergrad, and how much you really learned in them.

There are a lot of programs out there with those names that really mean very different things.

Giving good advice requires a lot more information.

In addition to what Dr. Courtney said, it seems to me like you're approaching this backwards. It sounds like you want a master's degree and want advice on what you should take it in.

The reason most people pursue a masters degree (or any graduate degree) in the sciences is because they desire an advanced understanding of that subject - more than what they already know. The advanced degree is a means to accomplishing a deeper goal, not the goal itself.

You might want to start by asking yourself what you want to study or do research on. What kind of project would you enjoy?

Thank you for your reply Dr. Courtney and Choppy :) .. the problem with is not just i don't know what I want to study .. I am interesting in studying quantum physics but because I am a Biophysicist so it sound good Idea to study Quantum Biology. But when I tried to read about it I didn't understand clearly what the aim of studying this field that is why I am hesitating about this field ..?

I don't understand this at all. You want to go into quantum biology, yet, you don't know what it is. If you don't know what it is, why would you want to go into it?
