AI Thread Summary
Applying to prestigious universities like Harvard, MIT, CalTech, and Oxford requires careful planning, especially regarding application deadlines. Currently, the deadlines for Fall 2011 have passed, and options for Winter 2012 or Fall 2012 are being considered. Starting in Winter 2012 is generally not feasible, as these institutions are typically full and do not accommodate mid-year admissions. The best course of action is to prepare for the next application cycle for Fall 2012, with applications due in the winter. While many schools may have openings, top-tier universities maintain strict admission standards and often have waiting lists for qualified candidates. Meeting basic application requirements does not guarantee admission, as acceptance rates are extremely low, with Harvard admitting fewer than 6% of applicants.

(Sorry for the two threads in 1 day, this is something that I feel requires attention though so I have created 2 threads, since it's 2 different topics)

I believe I have the qualifications to apply to well-regarded universities such as Harvard, MIT, CalTech, Oxford etc. I know their application deadlines have been exceeded a long time ago, so I'm trying to think of the best possible way of contacting the university and applying, either for Fall 2011, Winter 2012 or Fall 2012.

Is it possible to start after the 1st semester, i.e. Winter 2012? I have been looking at their homepages but haven't been able to find much.

What do you think is the best way to proceed?

Most of those schools do not have much in the way of requirements to apply, but meeting the basic requirements does NOT mean you have a decent chance of getting in. Harvard accepted fewer than 6% of applicants this year, and everyone who applied was qualified to get in (as were millions who did not apply). No, it's not possible to start this fall. They are full. Most won't consider letting you start in the spring; they will also be full. Try next fall instead. Applications will be due this winter.

At many less-competitive schools you can still find places for fall semester. At top-level schools, no. They have waiting lists of students that they can offer places to if other incoming students change their minds.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
