AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on comparing undergraduate physics programs at the University of California (UC) schools and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Key points include the differences in teaching styles, study difficulty, and overall environment between the two options. The EPFL offers a three-year bachelor program, which may be more intensive, particularly in the first year, while UC schools provide a four-year program that could be more gradual and accommodating. Participants suggest weighing the advantages of each based on personal learning preferences and future career goals. Ultimately, the decision should be made after receiving acceptance letters.

Hello,

I am currently a senior in a Swiss high school (french region) and i have applied to five University of Californias (UCSB, UCSC, UCSD, UCLA, UCI, UC Davis) and to the EPFL in Lausanne for physics.

I was wondering if anybody could give me some insight on the differences between them concerning the manner of teaching, difficulty of study, general environment, etc...
Would there be more advantages in one or the other for undergraduate studies?
Although the EPFL is three years of study (bachelor) compared to 4 (UCs), i have heard it may be more challenging in the first year? Would it therefore be better to go into a 4 year program which could be more 'gradual' or 'accomodating'?

Thanks for any advice/info you might have!

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
