AI Thread Summary
Newly unclassified documents reveal that Winston Churchill ordered the secrecy of a World War II pilot's encounter with an unidentified flying object, fearing it would cause mass panic and undermine faith in the church. Churchill reportedly insisted that the incident be classified for 50 years. The discussion centers around a letter from the grandson of one of Churchill's bodyguards, who sought more information from the British Ministry of Defense in 1999. This letter describes the bodyguard's presence during a meeting between Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower regarding the UFO sighting involving an RAF reconnaissance plane. Critics argue that the story lacks credible evidence, as it relies on hearsay rather than official documentation, and express concern that media attention may detract from more substantial UFO discussions.

"In order to prevent a mass panic, Winston Churchill kept top secret a close encounter between a World War II pilot and an unexplained flying object, newly unclassified documents reveal.

The British prime minister said the unexplained incident should be kept secret for 50 years, fearing it would provoke a "mass panic."...

"The man, who is not named in the files, said Churchill was reported to have exclaimed, "This event should be immediately classified since it would create mass panic amongst the general population -- and destroy one's belief in the church."

I am fascinated with this, and hope that the event is detailed in a document soon to be released. I also find it funny that he refers to himself as "the church" ;-)

I have no idea why this is getting so much attention. It is a story based on a letter written by a man whose grandfather was allegedly a bodyguard for Churchill. So what? This is the sort of nonsense that discredits the truly interesting stuff. If someone can produce the original RAF reports, that would be another matter. At least that would be an official source and not just hearsay.

According to reports, the grandson of one of Churchill's personal bodyguards, wrote to the British Ministry of Defense in 1999 hoping to learn more about the incident. His account, along with Churchill's claimed reaction, were among a new batch of files released from Britain's National Archives, though the man's
identity was not released.

The letter describes how the man's grandfather, who served with the RAF in World War II, was present when Churchill went to discuss a UFO sighting with Dwight Eisenhower. The incident involved an RAF reconnaissance plane, returning from France or Germany, that was said to have been intercepted by an unidentified metallic object near the English coastline...

If anything beyond hearsay is offered as evidence, we can open the thread again.

The media effectively sabotages this subject by making a big deal about nothing, as they do here.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
