This is just a spinoff from the thread "How do you view other people". Usually, since I'm a math major, people tend to think I'm weird. "You like math?!", they would ask. I was wondering if anybody else here gets the same thing from people they know or meet.

I'm quite the loner.

I would recommend high powered binoculars.

Do you mean aside from the death threat?

Socially, its a tough thing to move from LA to a small timber town in Oregon in which half of the town is related. Throw in a love of physics, a lifelong dedication to environmentalism, strong and outspoken political views, and the timber crisis...hee hee, run for the hills ma! They haven't managed to string me up yet but for a while I wasn't sure... Oh well, "if you're not making enemies then you're not doing enough". Fortunately for my own skin I'm mellowing with age.

As for being one of the guys...   Not in this universe. If God is kind I will never really know what other people think of me.

i like math too. i will say that i can do pretty well in it. i don't have that kind of problem from the people around me. my friends wished they could do the same, like math and do great in exams. sometimes people call other weird because they can never be them. just like when someone risk his life to save other, the selfish will think that it is unwise because they will never have the courage to do so.

I think when you get right down to it, people just don't like me very much. My low tolerance for stupidity doesn't encourage them though, I'm sure. Oh well, the people who's opinions i care about generally like me, so its all good (of course that's only 5 out of six billion, but what the heck...)

I think people either love me or hate me. I think that's because i ahve become very confident of myself, and some people quite like that but others hate it, especially when i have reason to be confident about something.

I'm a loner but if people talk to me (I have no problem socializing. I just choose not to), they tend to notice that I'm cynical, bitter, slightly misanthropic, but at the same time and on the same level, modest, soft-hearted, and open-minded.

They also tend to agree I have a dry sense of humor.

I go to an engineering-science school so being a physics major doesn't make me any special.

Well, I didn't really mean that they were picking on me. They're all friends of mine, it's just I'm the only one among them that likes math. Thankfully for me, I have a good sense of humor and an even better personality. At least, I think so.

That describes me, more or less. :approve:

The average person views me as someone destined to be successful.
I view myself as someone who only hopes to be successful.
The intellects view me as a non-threatening person.
I view myself as much more threatening and able than them.

I used to be outgoing.
Now i am quite, constantly attempting to concentrate on what i need to get done.

I used to have girlfriends.
Now i only imagine having the time for one, as well as the outgoing attitude to ask her out.

:p

People view me a someone to be looked up to; an intellectual giant to whose heights they can only aspire, a lion among mice; somone to praise, nay worship, usually by the the sacrfiice of animals and ritualistic canibalism.

My sister said that my marriage was definitely designed in heaven - to prevent any other poor souls having to put up with me or my wife for a lifetime!

Does that answer the question?

First of all, I'd just like to say that I'm out of peanut butter. I've been too busy to cook and/or buy groceries lately and I've been living on the stuff. Now I have nothing to eat! :frown:

Oooh, I can check under the couch cushions...

*******

People that don't know me think I am outgoing, friendly, "a people person", funny, sociable.

People that know me think I am an anti-social, reclusive workaholic, quiet, reserved.

Go figure.

I'm not outgoing. I'm usually quiet, or at least I am at first. If I get to know you and get comfortable about you, it may be hard to get me to shut up.

I'm petite, blonde, wear sparkly slippers, and I run around the office building responding to tech support calls. I think some people think I am the computer fairy.

Well, let's see. I've been told I'm talkative, quiet, outgoing, keep to myself, arrogant, humble, intimidating, friendly, selfish, generous, a real team player, and don't work well with others.

Glad everyone agrees

A co-worker calls me 'Bank of America' because I always have money the day before payday.

Say, could anyone spare a ten?

People think I'm weird because I always say the most random things.

I'd agree with that.

Hey me too!

Okay, it's just like me except for the part about being petite and blond and wearing sparkly slippers, that and very few people call me the computer fairy (well not to my face anyway).

I'm shy and quiet. Perfectly content to be alone, but liked by most people who know me. I think I'm pretty lazy, but most other people see me as industrious. People like my sense of humor. People think I am smarter than I think I am. People think I am weird, I think they are right about that.

Honest, I don't wear sparkly slippers around the office (just at home). Just kidding.

You don't know how similar you are to me. Speaking of being quiet, in Geology class we were having a discussion and when we got the papers back from it he noted that I was awfully quiet. I told him I was always quiet. He agreed.

No, but I can get some.

Ok, math people. How many of you have gotten a weird look when you said that you're into math? I know I've gotten my fair share.

I was wondering if anybody else here gets the same thing from people they know or meet.

I'm often judged on my appearance. My very Asian appearance in a very white part of Canada.

You know, the token Asian guy? If you've seen Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, you probably know the stereotype. It's usually the intelligent, hard-working, silent and unathletic guy. Usually nerdy and very good at math/science.

I would say I'm hard working, but hardly silent. I'm told I whine a lot by friends. I don't dress like a 'nerd', at least I don't think I do.

At least you're judged by your interests. People always draw conclusions on the way I look.

This teacher I never even talked to said, "Hey, you look smart, come here and do this problem."

During elementary school, I was put in a ESL (English Second Language) class. I could read and write better than all my other classmates, and I proved it so they moved me out of the class. They were so impressed by me due to their own ignorance. English was my first language, so I can only assume they put me in there because of my face. There were kids in my class who couldn't read and weren't thrown in ESL. Damn...I hated Elementary school. (This wasn't in Quebec, but in Western Canada). When I moved to Quebec around Junior High, I was put in more advanced English classes, in an english school.

I had a similar experience. When my family moved to a different town, I was placed in the lowest reading group level. A friend and I were so bored with the slow reading pace that we would race each other reading ahead. The problem is that when we were called on to read, we would never know where the rest of the class was in the material. I was in that group for two years. At the start of 8th grade, one of the better teachers spotted that we were actually chapters ahead of the rest of the group and moved us to the highest level.

I'm not really a math person, but I've had to take a few math courses now that I've returned to school. When I tell someone I am taking Calculus, or Physics, or College Algebra, I get quite a few "You've-got-to-be-nuts" stares and lots of "Better-You-Than-Me" looks as well.

You must be incredibly handsome, witty, charming and enjoy wearing sparkly slippers.

I have been told several times, "Wow, I didn't even know you could talk."

That's what I'm talking about. When I tell people I'm in Calculus III, they give a disgusted look on their face and say stuff like, "Good luck".

I don't know about handsome, but I got the other things down.

Haven't been told that yet. Mostly just, "You need to talk more." Now that I think about it, my mom told me that she was worried that I didn't talk much.
