AI Thread Summary
When someone quotes your post from a different thread, you will receive an alert, even if you do not watch that thread. This feature is designed to notify users of mentions, which can sometimes annoy the original poster if they receive frequent alerts. One user expressed concern about potentially irritating another member by quoting them to give credit. To avoid this, they considered simply mentioning the person's name without quoting. The discussion highlights the balance between acknowledging contributions and respecting others' preferences regarding notifications.

Dear PF Forum,
If someone quotes your post from thread other than your quoted post.
Do you get an alert?
For example like this

Thanks SteamKing.
And..., the approximately sugar percentage in a living organism?
If approximately 95% elements composition of a living organism is Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and approximately 60% to 70% is water, then, how is the percentage of sugar/glucose? Just approximate number would be enough for me.

Thanks.

Thanks, Greg.
Even in a thread that we don't "watch"?

Ahh, that's why. I think jtbell (no tag here ) got annoyed when I requote him. Although all my intentions was to give him some credit for his phrase that I thought is a good one.
This is his quote in this thread: https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/learning-programming-languages.847121/

"OK, here's what I'd like to do, but none of the tools we've learned so far can accomplish it. So here's something new: pointers."
That was how jtbell taught dynamic memory allocation. That phrase impresses me. That I often requote it along with his name.
Now I know, even if I want to give credit to someone, that person will be annoyed to have alert thrown at him/her.
So, perhaps I just type his name as above, so that person won't get alert.
Okayyy, Greg. Thanks a lot.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
This came up in my job today (UXP). Never thought to raise it here on PF till now. Hyperlinks really should be underlined at all times. PF only underlines them when they are rolled over. Colour alone (especially dark blue/purple) makes it difficult to spot a hyperlink in a large block of text (or even a small one). Not everyone can see perfectly. Even if they don't suffer from colour deficiency, not everyone has the visual acuity to distinguish two very close shades of text. Hover actions...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
