Does an Extra ½ Year in Completing a Degree Affect Your Academic Future?

AI Thread Summary
Completing a Master's degree in 2.5 years instead of the standard 2 years is generally not viewed negatively in academia, especially if the student maintains a high average and gains research experience. A strong performance on standardized tests, such as the Physics GRE, further supports the application for a PhD program. Overall, the additional half-year is unlikely to hinder opportunities for graduate school admission.

Hi

I guess it is somewhat standard to complete a M.Sc. in 2 years. But let's hypothetically say that a students spends 2½ years instead completing the degree, but still obtains a high average. Will the fact that an extra ½ year was spent be seen as something negative in academia when applying for e.g. a PhD? What are your experiences with this?

Niles.

I don't think so. If you have an MSc with a high average, some research experience, and do well on the PhysicsGRE. You should have no problem finding a grad school. I don't think the extra time will affect anything.

Hello, I graduated from undergrad a few years ago with a Major in Physics and minor in Electrical Engineering. I tried to get experience working on and testing circuits through my professor who studied Neutrinos, however covid caused the opportunity to go away and I graduated with no experience or internships. I have attempted to break into the engineering industry with no success. Right now I am considering going for a Masters in Electrical Engineering and I need advice on if this would be...
I don't know if anyone on here works for any of the well known defense companies of your country, whichever country you are from?? Also, if you choose to work in one, do you think the engineering education provide from your school would adequately prepare you for the job. What do I mean by that? Well if you work at say Lockheed Martin and you work in the latest iteration of a missile or if you work at Pratt & Whitney, they assign you to work in the team helping out with building the jet...
