Does anyone have any information about summer workshops?

AI Thread Summary
Summer workshops and symposiums are primarily designed for graduate students, but many do accept advanced undergraduates or those transitioning between undergraduate and graduate studies. While some workshops may require participants to cover their own costs, opportunities exist that are less competitive and more accessible. An example is the astrostatistics workshop at Penn State, which focuses on essential statistical skills for astronomers. This particular workshop includes both lectures and computer labs, offering specialized topics that may not be available at participants' home institutions. Overall, while the format may vary, these workshops typically do not involve direct research collaboration with professors.

Summer workshops/summer symposiums/etc?

Most of them are for graduate students. But do any allow people who are in between undergrad and grad school?

And how competitive are they?

I'm specifically interested about astronomy, but people can feel free to post details about any summer workshop here.

The ones I've attended were geared towards grad students, but I can't see them turning away an advanced undergrad or someone in between. But since you're in between, you might have to pay for some of it yourself. A good one is the astrostatistics workshop at Penn State; here's the website. It's very useful since astronomers tend to only know some basic statistics.

I don't remember having to do more than just sign up for this one; it wasn't competitive, anyone could go.

Wow, nice. :) Is it just lecture though? (no working with other professors?)

It was lectures and computer labs. Workshops don't tend to be actual research; they're specialized topics that your school might not offer.

Ah yes that's true. Was it mostly lecture, computer lab, or half-half?

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
