Drag Force on a Streamlined Body

AI Thread Summary
The drag force on a streamlined body is calculated using the formula Fd = 1/2 . ρ . v^2 . Cd . A, where A represents the reference area. For streamlined bodies, the reference area should be the largest cross-sectional area as viewed from the direction of the airflow. This area is crucial for accurately determining the drag force due to air resistance. Understanding the correct reference area is essential for precise calculations in fluid dynamics. Accurate drag force assessments are vital for optimizing the design of streamlined objects.

Hi,

I know that the drag force on an object: Fd= 1/2 . ρ . v^2 . Cd . A

where A is the reference area.

But in the case of a streamlined body, I don't know what will be taken as the reference area. Should it be the largest cross-sectional area of the body?

Oh sorry, in this case I'm talking about drag force caused by air resistance

Yes, the cross section area as seen from the direction of the wind

I have recently been really interested in the derivation of Hamiltons Principle. On my research I found that with the term ##m \cdot \frac{d}{dt} (\frac{dr}{dt} \cdot \delta r) = 0## (1) one may derivate ##\delta \int (T - V) dt = 0## (2). The derivation itself I understood quiet good, but what I don't understand is where the equation (1) came from, because in my research it was just given and not derived from anywhere. Does anybody know where (1) comes from or why from it the...
