French police discovered five sticks of dynamite in a Paris department store, Printemps Haussmann, following a threat from a group called the Afghan Revolutionary Front. The group demanded the withdrawal of French troops from Afghanistan by the end of February, warning of "several bombs" in the store. The dynamite, found in a toilet cistern, was described as old and not capable of exploding, as no detonator was present. Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie confirmed the situation was under control and emphasized that the device was not intended to detonate. Dynamite found in Paris department store

PARIS (AFP) — French police discovered five sticks of dynamite Tuesday in a Paris department store after AFP received a letter from an unknown group threatening attacks unless France pulls its troops out of Afghanistan.

Police cordoned off Printemps Haussmann store and the capital's best known shopping boulevard while hordes of shoppers and tourists were evacuated at the height of the Christmas shopping season.

A group calling itself the Afghan Revolutionary Front had earlier sent a letter to AFP warning of "several bombs" in the upscale store and demanding that France withdraw its 2,600 troops by the end of February.

French anti-terrorism police used sniffer dogs to locate the dynamite in a third-floor toilet cistern at the Printemps menswear store, one of a group of famous shops on the historic Boulevard Haussmann.

Interior minister Michele Alliot-Marie said no detonator was found -- meaning that the device could not explode -- and an official described the find as old sticks of dynamite fastened together with a piece of cord.

Briefing reporters at the scene, she said: "From what we know so far, this was not a device that was intended to explode."

So we need a suspect with ready access to dynamite, is from a country with a strong anti-French feeling, but who never gets the technical details correct.

I think it's Wile E. Coyote

Maybe it was a terrorist expressing his dislike for mens French fashions? I'm really glad no one was hurt. I suspect everyone should keep a eye open for odd things in odd places.

Those dogs are pretty good if they can sniff dynamite in a men's public toilet.

Very few industries uses dynamite anymore so this was probably some bunch of geniuses that had found some old stock. So it's probably a good thing they didn't know about detonators.

It's generally more effective to just phone in a threat than actually make a bomb in terms of causing disruption and gaining publicity.
Because of this when we used to have proper terrorists in europe there were agreed code words worked out between the police and official terrorists ( IRA/ETA/Red etc).
I always wondered how this was done. Did they have a comittee meeting with an agenda, minutes, and tea with a little plate of biscuits - but with the delegates on one side of the table wearing camoflague and black balaclavas?

Maybe Larry Craig can be trained for that?

Hmmmm, so this terrorist group wants France to surrender to Afghanistan. Oh the irony.
