Efficient Pulley System for Fabric: Reduce Effort by 1/3 | Physics Forums"

SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on designing an efficient pulley system to reduce the effort required to pull fabric wrapped around a wooden rod by one-third. While no specific pulley system was suggested, a key recommendation was to examine the entire setup for friction points. Implementing ball bearings or Teflon sleeves is advised to minimize friction, thereby decreasing the force needed to operate the pulley system effectively.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic pulley mechanics
  • Knowledge of friction and its impact on mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with ball bearings and Teflon sleeves
  • Basic principles of force and effort in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research different types of pulley systems and their mechanical advantages
  • Learn about friction reduction techniques in mechanical systems
  • Explore the use of ball bearings in pulley applications
  • Investigate the properties and applications of Teflon in reducing friction
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, DIY enthusiasts, and anyone interested in optimizing mechanical systems for efficiency and reduced effort in fabric handling applications.

I would like to design an efficient pulley system to pull a fabric which is wrapped around a wooden rod. Is there any pulley system which can reduce the effort to 1/3 rd of the actual?

I have attached some images of the setup.

vaas44, Welcome to Physics Forums!

Although I cannot suggest any different pulley system to diminish the pulling effort, I will offer this: Examine the whole system for moving parts that have friction. Then install ball bearings or teflon sleeves. Reducing friction will reduce the force necessary to pull the fabric.

Good luck and Happy New Year!
