Electric motor with outer rotor

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding a specific type of DC motor with an outer rotor configuration, akin to the design of computer cooling fans or ceiling fans. Participants explore the characteristics and availability of such motors, focusing on their power and size requirements.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks a powerful DC motor with an outer rotor, specifically around 2 inches in diameter, similar to a computer cooling fan.
  • Another participant expresses skepticism about the existence of such a motor, noting that typical cooling fans and ceiling fans are AC motors, not DC motors.
  • A clarification is made that the reference to cooling fans was about mechanical similarity rather than electrical type.
  • One participant suggests that the term 'outrunner' motor may be relevant and encourages searching for it online.
  • Another participant reviews a specific site for outrunner motors but finds them unsuitable for the original request.
  • A later reply indicates a need for more specific requirements to assist in the search for the desired motor type.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the availability of the requested motor type. There are competing views regarding the classification of motors and the feasibility of finding a suitable DC motor with an outer rotor.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the definitions and classifications of motors, particularly distinguishing between AC and DC types. The discussion also highlights the need for specific requirements to narrow down the search for the desired motor.

I'm trying to find a DC motor with the rotating part on the exterior (the electromagnets and wires attached to the central axis) - something similar to a computer cooling fan or ceiling fan. It must be as powerful as possible for about 2 inches diameter. Any idea where I could find such a thing on the internet?

I'd be amazed if you can find one that even exists, that you would be pretty awsome.

PC cooling fans and ceiling fans are not DC motors. They are AC motors. I know lots of places where you can find a AC motor and controller which will have a DC input to the controller.

When I said "something similar to a computer cooling fan or ceiling fan" I was referring to the mechanical similarity (i.e having the rotor on the exterior).

If you know where I could find such a motor (rotor in the exterior) with DC input please tell me.

The term for what you're looking for is an 'outrunner' motor. Try Googling that and you'll find lots of info.

Hmmm...
Give me a couple of days to sober up and I'll take another shot at it. It would be helpful if you can be more specific as to your requirements. Outrunners are the only things that I can think of, off of the top of my head, that match the originally posted question.
