From MSc Nuclear Physics to PhD medical physics is it possible?

Click For Summary
To pursue a PhD in medical physics with a focus on nuclear medicine or radiotherapy, it is essential to have a strong academic record, particularly for securing fully funded scholarships. While fully funded programs are rare, especially for international students, many universities offer a combination of stipends, teaching and research assistantships, and opportunities for quality assurance work that can help cover costs. Prospective students are encouraged to explore accredited medical physics programs in Canada, where funding options are more commonly available. For a comprehensive list of CAMPEP-accredited programs, resources can be found on the CAMPEP website.

I would think that to get a fully-funded scholarship, your record up to now would have to be quite outstanding. Can you share some of your major accomplishments with us that you will be putting on your application to these schools?

We also have a number of folks who are very experienced in Medical Physics. You should get good responses to your questions here.

These days it's rare for medical physics PhD programs to be "fully" funded, particularly for international students, where tuition tends to be higher. That said, there are many programs where they offer a combination of stipends, teaching assistanceships, research assistanceships, and work doing quality assurance measurements that allow students to fully support themselves through the process without taking on any student debt. You might want to start by checking out some of the accredited medical physics programs in Canada, where this is often the case.

Hi all, Hope you are doing well. I'm a current grad student in applied geophysics and will finish my PhD in about 2 years (previously did a HBSc in Physics, did research in exp. quantum optics). I chose my current field because of its practicality and its clear connection to industry, not out of passion (a clear mistake). I notice that a lot of people (colleagues) switch to different subfields of physics once they graduate and enter post docs. But 95% of these cases fall into either of...
