AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around concerns that PF has compromised its academic integrity by incorporating intrusive ads, particularly within post content. Users express frustration over these ads detracting from the site's primary purpose, with some feeling that PF has "sold out" for financial gain. While one user notes that ads should not appear for contributors, others report seeing ads on public computers, suggesting potential adware issues. The conversation highlights a mix of respect lost for the organization and the necessity of funding to maintain the site. Overall, the presence of ads, especially in thread posts, remains a contentious topic among users.

The ads from google really have taken the academic focus away from the site.
The Ads should remain outside of the post, not inside it.
If I want to ask a question, I don't want to promote random companies.
PF has sold out...money IS needed, but c'mon!
It's terrible.
I have lost some respect for the entire organization.
I have been able to log on here for help and to help without all of the extra crap to look at so far...
How much do you guys get off of the clicks?

You shouldn't be seeing any ads as a contributor. Are you sure it's not adware on your computer? You might want to run a adware/spyware/virus scan if you're seeing ads, especially embedded in posts.

The ads haven't changed in years. Not sure why the fuss now. It costs mid to high $xxx a month to run PF. It's just a reality.

Hi,
I see the ads embedded in the posts on the college computer that's hooked up to their network. At home, there aren't any.
I mentioned this oddity to the guys that keep the network running and they have fixed it.
I appreciate your responses. Probably there was adware or something. It was happening on all of their computers..in the library..in the mathlab...in my office...
Thanks again.

I remember, that at the time when happyg1 posted this, there were advertisement appearing in the first post of the thread. They disappeared soon after the previous posts, but now I'm seeing them again. I'm probably not the only one seeing them, since I wasn't the last time either?

edit: Okey, they disappear when I login. But is that normal still? There hasn't always been ads in first posts of the threads for non-logged viewers.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
