AI Thread Summary
The recent Wikileaks release about Trapwire has sparked discussions regarding its implications and the lack of public approval for such surveillance systems. Critics argue that there is no mechanism to contest its implementation, while others dismiss the claims as exaggerated conspiracy theories. TrapWire was tested on a limited scale by the Homeland Security Department but was ultimately deemed ineffective, leading to the termination of the trial. Additionally, the New York Police Department has refuted claims that TrapWire is linked to any surveillance cameras in the subway system. The conversation highlights concerns over privacy and the transparency of government surveillance initiatives.

I don't know how many of you have heard of the recent release by Wikileaks about Trapwire, but any discussion on that? There seems to be no way in the system to fight this because it was never approved by the people in the first place.

Welcome to the forums. When posting on a current affairs topic you should post a link to what you are talking about and write a brief summary. Firstly because it's bad manners to expect others to have to look up what you're talking about and secondly because this is an international forum and what may be important news in your area of the world doesn't get a mention in others.

Another overblown conspiracy theory.

Though TrapWire Inc., the Virginia company that sells the software, would not comment on Monday, the reports appear to be wildly exaggerated. TrapWire was tried out on 15 surveillance cameras in Washington and Seattle by the Homeland Security Department, but officials said it ended the trial last year because it did not seem promising.

A claim in the leaked e-mails that 500 cameras in the New York subway were linked to TrapWire is false, said Paul J. Browne, the New York Police Department’s chief spokesman. “We don’t use TrapWire.”

Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
