Help with shear stress and angle of twist

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the maximum shear stress and angle of twist for a solid shaft with a diameter of 100mm, transmitting 75kW at 150 revolutions per minute (rev/min). The modulus of rigidity (G) is given as 80 GN/m². The calculated shear stress is 2.4 mNm², although the unit is questioned by another participant. The angle of twist calculation requires the length of the shaft, which is missing from the initial problem statement.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of shear stress and its calculation
  • Knowledge of torsion in solid shafts
  • Familiarity with the modulus of rigidity (G)
  • Basic principles of power transmission in mechanical systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Learn how to calculate angle of twist in solid shafts using the formula θ = TL / (GJ)
  • Study the relationship between power, torque, and rotational speed in mechanical systems
  • Review the correct units for shear stress and their applications in engineering
  • Explore examples of torsional stress calculations in engineering textbooks
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineers, students studying mechanics of materials, and anyone involved in the design and analysis of rotating machinery will benefit from this discussion.

A solid shaft 100mm diameter which transmits 75kw at 150 rev/min.

the question is asking me to find the max shear stress and angle of twist per metre of the shaft length.

G=80GN/m^2

I was under the impression to find the angle of twist you needed the length in the first place. None of the examples in class had length missing.
I worked the shear stress out as 2.4mNm^2

Thanks for any help

"the question is asking me to find the max shear stress and angle of twist per meter of the shaft length."

I'm unfamiliar with units of 'mNm^2' for stress.

Anywho, if you want any help on this question, you need to provide some of your work.
