High frequency acoustic waves underwater

AI Thread Summary
High frequency acoustic waves are significantly absorbed underwater due to their interaction with small particles and bubbles present in natural water. These particles cause the sound waves to travel at different velocities, leading to phase cancellation as the waves become misaligned. This effect is more pronounced with shorter wavelengths, which are closer in size to the particles, resulting in greater absorption. In contrast, longer wavelengths are less affected because they do not resonate with the same impurities. Additional factors like heat, currents, depth, and water chemistry also influence sound absorption.

Hi,

was just wondering if anyone could help me out with this query, I'm just curious to know why high frequency acoustic waves are greatly absorbed underwater? Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you are mentioning sound of higher frequency than 1 Khz. Almost all water in nature has small particles or bubbles in it, and sound travels through those particles at different velocities than the water around it. When sound with such short wavelengths travel through those particles, it becomes slightly out of phase with the surrounding wave, partially cancelling it out. Do this many times, and the wave is greatly reduced. Longer wavelengths are not affected as much, since they are not as close to the particle/bubble/impurity sizes one finds in water. There are also factors such as heat, currents, depth, and chemistry. I hope your question was answered.

Thread 'Motional EMF in Faraday disc, co-rotating magnet axial mean flux'
So here is the motional EMF formula. Now I understand the standard Faraday paradox that an axis symmetric field source (like a speaker motor ring magnet) has a magnetic field that is frame invariant under rotation around axis of symmetry. The field is static whether you rotate the magnet or not. So far so good. What puzzles me is this , there is a term average magnetic flux or "azimuthal mean" , this term describes the average magnetic field through the area swept by the rotating Faraday...
